However, the ceremony’s most memorable moments came from actor acceptance speeches and star-studded presenters. Held at the Beverly Hilton, the 81st Golden Globes marked the first time films Oppenheimer and Barbie went head-to-head after dominating the summer box office as the “Barbenheimer” duo.

While Greta Gerwig’s Barbie broke records, it only took home two Globes – Best Original Song for Taylor Swift’s “Pink Convertible” and the special Cinematic Achievement Award.

Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer won a leading four awards including Best Motion Picture – Drama. Nolan also won Best Director and stars Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. earned top acting honors.

“This is a really intimidating room,” said Emma Thomas while accepting the Best Drama award for producing Oppenheimer. She gave credit to Nolan for bringing out the best in the cast and crew.

In the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category, the bizarre sci-fi romance Poor Things upset award-season favorites like The Fabelmans and Banshees of Inisherin. Star Emma Stone won Best Actress in a Comedy for her role. Paul Giamatti earned Best Actor in a Comedy for the summer indie hit The Holdovers

“This has to be the first time this award has been given to a character who smells like fish,” he joked about his caretaker role. On the television side, Emmy winner Succession continued its awards show dominance by winning Best Drama Series. Star Sarah Snook also repeated her Emmy success with a Best Drama Actress Globe.

“This show has changed my life,” said an emotional Snook. The new hit FX comedy The Bear won Best Comedy Series, with creator Christopher Storer praising the real Chicago restaurant workers who inspired the show.
