‘Grew up Around Women With Curves’: Jennifer Lopez Says Fans Commenting On Her Butt Are Sexist
Recently, American singer, actress, and dancer Jennifer Lopez released her documentary, Halftime, on Netflix. The documentary starts with the 50th birthday of the singer in June 2019 and covers many significant events in her life. She also talked about the criticism that she has faced throughout her career and emphasized this one interview that went too far.
In the documentary, she mentions how she dealt with comments about her body
In the 2000s, Jennifer Lopez faced a lot of racist media coverage about her body, and her personal life. She talked about how it really affected her confidence and how it made her question her acting, singing, and dancing. She believes that media is “really abusive, dysfunctional.”
She talked about one specific interview that bothered her the most
In her documentary, she mentioned this one specific interview that went too far. In 2002, in an interview with Billy Bush, she was asked “People have raved about it for years. How do you feel about your butt?”
Jennifer Lopez felt like this was a step too far and addressed the comments that were made about her body. In her documentary, she said, “I grew up around women with curves, so it was nothing ever I was ashamed of. It was hard when you think people think you’re a joke, like you’re a punchline. But I wound up affecting things in a way that I never intended to affect them. No matter what I achieved, their appetite to cover my personal life overshadowed everything that was happening in my career.”
She explained how felt when she faced criticism: “I just had a very low self-esteem. I really believed a lot of what they said, which was that I wasn’t any good – I wasn’t a good singer, I wasn’t a good actress, I wasn’t a good dancer, I wasn’t good at anything. I just didn’t even belong here why wouldn’t I just go away.”
Her partner, Ben Affleck, also made an appearance in the documentary
In the documentary, Ben Affleck also made an appearance and gave his insights on this topic. He says looking at the camera, “I said to her once, ‘Doesn’t this bother you?’ And Jennifer Lopez said, “‘I’m Latina. I’m a woman. I expected this. You just don’t expect it. You expect to be treated fairly.’”
