Hawkeye & Black Widow, Avengers: Endgame Scene Was Originally More Complex
Hawkeye and Black Widow’s mission in Avengers: Endgame is a major one. However, an early script of the film called for Thanos’ army to interfere. Neither Clint Barton or Natasha Romanoff have any solo projects at this point in the MCU, but whenever the duo appears it only depicts how close they are to each other.
Major Endgame Spoilers ahead!
After surviving Budapest together, their mission to Vormir in Avengers: Endgame didn’t give a similar outcome. They found out quickly that one of them will have to sacrifice their life to get the Soul Stone and even after agreeing that it had to be accomplished, they didn’t agree on who should sacrifice their life for the Soul Stone. The two fight each other to settle the difference and ultimately Black Widow won, sacrificing her life to get the stone.

This scene in Endgame gets really personal but co-director Joe Russo revealed that this wasn’t going to be the case. During the scripting of the film, Joe told Happy Sad Confused podcast that a version of the scene saw Thanos’ forces arriving and speeding up the whole event.
Here’s what Joe Russo Said:
“There was another version of Vormir that involved Thanos’ troops showing up and then Black Widow having to run the gauntlet and getting shot as she runs the gauntlet to leap off the cliff. And again, it just felt like it was distracting from what was most powerful about the scene, which is two friends, one of them having to die, and then literally fighting each other to be the one who dies.”
While this version would’ve definitely beefed up action on Vormir, but that wasn’t really needed. It seemed better for characters to work it all out among themselves rather than having to see Black Widow running away from Thanos’ army to secure the stone. The end result of both the version was the same, which backs up writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus that Black Widow needed to be the one to sacrifice.

This Scene Turned Out To Be Extremely Complex
Obviously, this scene became one of the most controversial ones from Endgame. Many took issue with the death of Black Widow and lack of a proper conclusion or funeral. Many fans objected that two female characters (Gamora and Natasha) were selected as the ones to have died on Vormir. Their deaths on Vormir aren’t expected to be the end of their MCU time. Black Widow is likely getting an origin film which will most likely be a prequel. Meanwhile, Gamora – either the one who died on Vormir or the 2014 version – appears integral to the plot of the next Guardians of the Galaxy film.
