Chris Pratt, star of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, recently revealed that the upcoming sequel will contain the first F-bomb to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While in attendance at the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 world premiere on Thursday in Los Angeles, the 43-year-old discussed the use of the F-word for the first time ever in the superhero series with Variety. Speculation about Star-Lord’s use of the F-bomb first surfaced a few days ago after the writer-director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn tweeted that the word “f*cking” would be heard uncensored in the film.

The MPA only permits one F-bomb in PG-13 films, as Gunn noted (with a few rare exceptions, like David Fincher’s The Social Network, which kept its PG-13 rating despite having two F-bombs in the final cut).

The director also mentioned how the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel’s rating was pushed to its absolute limit by the use of the F-bomb.

“You can only have one [f-bomb] in a PG-13 movie. That said it wasn’t planned — I told Chris to add it on set and it just made the moment funnier so we kept [it].”

Chris Pratt Joked About Dropping The First ‘F-Bomb’ In A Marvel Movie

At the red carpet interview with Variety, Chris Pratt, who plays Peter Quill/Star-Lord, praised his groundbreaking use of the F-word. Therefore, the actor is “proud” to be the first Marvel character to use an F-bomb.

While trolling Samuel L Jackson for getting the first F-bomb in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before him, he said,

“Yes, I do drop the first F-bomb. Take that, [Nick Fury actor] Samuel Jackson.”

Elizabeth Debicki, who plays Ayesha, then interrupted Pratt and inquired as to whether the profanity used by Star-Lord was scripted or improvised. The Tomorrow War actor quickly replied that he created the joke on the spot. To quote him:

“No, it was not, it was not scripted. Everyone’s been trying to improv F-bombs [in the MCU] for 10 years and finally one made it in. Usually when you start dropping F-bombs — like in an improv scenario — it’s really your indication to the filmmaker that you’d like to move on, and they actually put it into the film, so that’s pretty good!”

On 27 April, while making a guest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Pratt expressed similar views regarding the use of the F-word. Jimmy Kimmel, the show’s host, first called out Pratt for using the word, then he made a joke about Jackson as well, asking, “How did Sam Jackson not get that honor?”

Kimmel continued, making fun of Jackson’s Nick Fury Marvel character by saying,

He must be Nick Furious right now.”

Pratt agreed while laughing, and saying,

“He’s Nick Furious. I think everybody’s tried [to use the F-word before], you know?”

James Gunn Discussed Avengers: Infinity War

The choice made by James Gunn to have Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill/Star-Lord use the F-word reflected his distinct vision for the character.

Additionally, Gunn was not averse to citing instances in which he thought other MCU movies misrepresented Quill’s persona. Recent criticism of Star-Lord’s portrayal in the 2018 film Avengers: Infinity War came from him, who claimed that the character “did some things that I wouldn’t have wanted” with the Guardians‘ leader.

Gunn referred to an issue with a specific scene where an upset Star-Lord thwarts the efforts of other MCU superheroes to defeat Infinity War’s Thanos.

Although it’s not yet known if Chris Pratt’s Quill will continue to appear in the Guardians of the Galaxy films after Gunn leaves the franchise. Thus, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is Pratt’s final opportunity to portray Quill in his idealized form.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will make its theatrical debut on May 5, 2023,
