One Character That Changed Denzel Washington’s Perspective of Life
The Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington has done numerous roles in movies and is often praised for them. But one character that Washington praised and eventually fell in love with after playing it, is Roman J. Israel. This character resonated with the actor as Washington was drawn to the character’s complexity and unique qualities. J. Israel became The Equalizer star’s favorite role in the movie Roman J. Israel, Esq. Another thing that fascinated the actor was Roman’s struggles with social interactions. Denzel Washington told Entertainment Weekly that:
“I felt like he was stuck somewhere in [the 1970s]. I picked ‘77, and I looked at my own pictures. I said, ‘Oh, yeah’. I googled black men in 1977. From Dr. J or whoever it was. One thing leads to another, you just start heading down that road, your journey.”
Washington considered playing Roman as one of his favorite roles he had ever done because the overlooked personality of Roman depicted how individuals in a society may fall through the cracks. The character became very special to Washington as he never played such a role and after playing it his perspective to see things in his life changed. The Training Day actor enjoyed sharing with his audience the similarities he has with Roman, one of them being inner awkwardness. The actor’s role was well-received by viewers and fans and it gave Washington a glimpse of how individuals like Roman face challenges in their daily lives.

The director told Total Film:
“Yeah, it’s up to him. Obviously, if he wanted to do another one, I would as well, but I don’t see it. But who knows?”
The director also shared some witty recollections while filming The Equalizer 3 and revealed that they did enjoy the local Italian food and other things but what was the most challenging for the cast was filming a church scene that was located high above the Amalfi Coast. It required navigating 700 steep steps and the cast was left vomiting after all the efforts they put to reach the place.
