A director like Martin Scorsese will undeniably get upset if not one but two of his movies fail to impress The Academy. Unfortunately, this turned out to be the reality of the two Scorsese movies which he thought would get nominated for the Oscar. The director’s distinctive style of storytelling in his movies has a unique and recognizable approach that sets Scorsese apart from others. Despite being known for exceptional stories, two particular Oscars brush-offs still bother the director. Martin Scorsese in an interview with GQ said:

“I always liked being nominated at the Academy, even though knowing, especially the fact that they didn’t nominate us for Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, when I didn’t get the Oscar, I understood that that wasn’t my lot in life…You can’t make a movie for an award. Sure, I would’ve liked it, but like, so what?”

The two movies, Raging Bull and Taxi Driver starring an incredible actor Robert De Niro did not satisfy the Academy to get nominated. Raging Bull which is based on the real life of a middleweight boxer, received critical acclaim and is recognized as one of the greatest movies ever made. However, despite these overlooked movies, Martin Scorsese continued to make hit films and in 2007 the director won his first Academy Award for Best Director for The Departed.

The Departed is undeniably a movie worth watching known for its incredibly blurred line between good and evil. Scorsese received his one and only Oscar for this movie which is still praised for being one of the best movies of Martin Scorsese. The director opened up about how De Niro turned down some of the major roles in his movies including The Departed, but despite the refusals Scorsese and De Niro continued to stay in touch and have collaborated in over 10 movies. In an interview with Deadline Scorsese said:

“I talked to him about other projects, and at one point he said, ‘You know the kind of stuff I like to do with you.’ I said, ‘OK.’ That became The Irishman, and it took nine years. We were always looking. ‘What about The Departed?’ ‘Nah, I don’t wanna do that.’ ‘OK.’”

The enduring friendship between the two iconic figures is highly praised in the movie world as they have done some of the most successful movies of their time. Robert De Niro gradually became an acclaimed celebrity after playing small roles in movies and then getting cast in big movies
