Martin Scorsese‘s movie Gangs of New York is a well-appreciated movie, not only for its impressive cast which includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Cameron Diaz but also for its historical accuracy. In an interview with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, DiCaprio explained how discussions were going on about casting Day-Lewis, and people around said:
‘Well, he’s retired. He’s a cobbler, he’s making shoes in Italy”.
Soon after the conversation, Scorsese told DiCaprio to “suss it out”. He wanted Day-Lewis in his movie and the Inception star had to bring him by hook or crook. So, Leonardo DiCaprio explained that it took a lot of sussing to convince Daniel Day-Lewis and even required a bit of help from Tobey Maguire to persuade the Lincoln star. After having a few dinners with the Shutter Island star, Daniel Day-Lewis agreed and signed for Gangs of New York.
