“He’s lying”: Darth Vader Star James Earl Jones Thought George Lucas Was Lying About Star Wars’ Biggest Reveal
When it comes to the iconic Star Wars franchise moments, none can take over The Empire Strikes Back. The movie is well known for bringing in one of the biggest twists in the history of Star Wars with only one line. While the iconic line was delivered by Darth Vader, it not only sent shockwaves down the fans but left James Earl Jones the star behind the voice of Darth Vader thinking that George Lucas was lying to him.

James Earl Jones Doubted George Lucas on Darth Vader’s Paternity
In a recently resurfaced interview, James Earl Jones the star behind the voice of Darth Vader talked about this initial skepticism about the most iconic scene in the movie The Empire Strikes Back. Like most of the fans, even Jones was taken aback by the shocking revelation by Darth Vader that he is the father of Luke, the hero of the movie.
Darth Vader who is often referred to as Vader was one of the most well-known antagonists in the original Star Wars trilogy which was created by George Lucas. Even though Vader was a Jedi Knight who turned to the dark side of the Force and became a Sith apprentice to Emperor Palpatine, he was mostly perceived to be just a machine by most of the viewers. This same perception of Vader did not let the star behind his voice James Earl Jones believe that he could be a father.
While the script was already written Jones wasn’t buying the new angle and thought that George Lucas was lying to him. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, talking about this in the interview Jones said “When I first saw the dialogue that said, ‘Luke, I am your father,’ I said to myself, ‘He’s lying. I wonder how they are going to play that lie out?’”
This revelation by Jones only shed light on how surprising the Star Wars scripts can be even for the actors.
James Earl Jones Found Irvin Kershner’s Voice Scary
Talking about this in yet another interview, James Earl Jones revealed how the director of the movie Irvin Kershner helped him to prepare for the role. Jones revealed that Kershner assisted him by recording his voice for the character.
However, if anything Jones was shocked by Kershner’s voice as he found it to be very scary. Confessing about this Jones said (as reported by The Hollywood Reporter) “On [Empire], because David Prowse [actor in the suit] knew his voice wasn’t going to be used, he just sort of threw the lines in,” Jones explained. “And Kershner gave me a soundtrack with him doing the voice of Darth Vader…it was scary as hell. Kershner was scarier than I could ever be.”
This revelation by Jones sheds light on the creative aspects of making a movie.
