“He’s not James Bond”: David Fincher Sets Record Straight for Michael Fassbender’s ‘The Killer’ Ahead of Release
American director David Fincher is one of the most prominent figures in the filmmaking industry. From music videos for phenomenal singers like Madonna to biographical movies, he has left no stone unturned in his career spanning more than four decades. He specializes in the crime and thriller genre and is ready to present yet another mindblowing thriller The Killer starring Michael Fassbender.
David Fincher made his directorial debut with the third installment of the Alien franchise and has since directed some of the greatest movies of all time such as The Social Network, Gone Girl, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Panic Room. He has an interesting update about his upcoming movie which is about a serial killer.
David Fincher’s The Killer Is Nowhere Close To James Bond
David Fincher has never been known to follow stereotypes when it comes to making movies. His movies are bound to keep the audience guessing who the antagonist is till the very end. His masterful direction plays a huge role in keeping the viewers hooked.
When it comes to assassins, the likes of James Bond, John Wick, and Jason Bourne spring to mind. These assassins with their classy fashion sense, charming looks, and high morals bring forth a complete package that will surely attract the attention of viewers. However, the same cannot be said about David Fincher’s cold-blooded sharpshooting lead character who stands as a stark contrast to what everyone is used to.
Michael Fassbender’s character in The Killer is far from James Bond who is more than just a licensed assassin as he serves the country and its queen. David Fincher confirmed as much to Empire, saying: “He’s not James Bond. Our guy flies coach.”
The Killer is set for its limited theatrical release in late October and will be available for streaming on Netflix soon after. The movie is based on the eponymous French graphic novel series written by Alexis “Matz” Nolent and illustrated by Luc Jacamon and aims to change the audience’s perspective about assassins.
David Fincher’s Take On The Titular Character
Michael Fassbender’s nameless character is going to challenge the stereotype of assassins as he has a methodical strategy for doing his job, and yet the moment things start going downhill, everything is plunged into a state of disarray.
Speaking of the character with Empire, David Fincher said:
“I thought the character’s nihilism was interesting, because it was tied to his self-loathing. Then I started thinking about this inner monologue. He has this whole thing he tells himself, which is a way of demeaning his prey so he can feel better about ostensibly being a serial killer for hire. I thought that could be interesting to navigate.”
The Fight Club director went on to reveal that there are no escape routes out of The Killer‘s world. He takes the audience with him wherever he goes so it will be interesting for viewers to see events unfold through the eyes of the assassin.
