‘Highlander’ Reboot: Besides Henry Cavill and John Wick Director Who Else Agreed to Work in Action Franchise?
Henry Cavill, the British actor, has gained notoriety for his role as Superman in the DC Extended Universe from 2013 until 2022. In addition, he has portrayed Geralt of Rivia in the fantasy series The Witcher on Netflix. Unfortunately, the actor has said goodbye to both his famous roles.
Now Cavill is set to star in another popular franchise, the 1986 time-traveling classic reboot of Highlander. The news was confirmed by the 40-year-old in 2021 through an Instagram post that included a picture of the Deadline report regarding the remake. The Highlander reboot had been in development for a long time, and news about the highly anticipated film is beginning to surface as director Chad Stalheski has provided an update.
Chad Stalheski provides an update on Highlander starring Henry Cavill
Chad Stahelski, director of the highly successful franchise John Wick, recently revealed the possibility of the Highlander Reboot. He sat down for a chat on the Happy Sad podcast and provided an update on Highlander, starring Henry Cavill.
After the groundbreaking 1986 film, the subsequent Highlander films failed to live up to the original, creating an uneven film franchise with a fascinating backstory. The reboot has been in development for some time but has struggled to get off the ground for years. However, recent reports paint a different picture.
Stahelski confirmed the film is still in the works and could be the start of a major franchise. He said,
“‘I think we have some very good elements now. The trick is when you have the tagline: ‘”There can only be one”, you just can’t kill everybody the first time.'”
The director revealed the new film is coming and could mean big things for the British actor. He further added,
“Highlander, I can tell you right now… if we got our s*** together and we pull off the feature, we have ideas for days about how to make the coolest characters and to make that an epic TV show.”
The Highlander franchise started in 1986 and continued until the end of the 20th century and into the 21st century with a TV series starring Christopher Lambert. The reboot, with some exciting talent attached like Henry Cavill and Chad Stahelski, could finally be moving forward.
Everything to know about Henry Cavill’s Highlander reboot
The 1986 film Highlander catalyzed a massive series that featured live-action television shows, theatrical sequels, and animated films for children. In his Highlander update, Stahelski said that the new Henry Cavill Highlander film would draw from both the 1986 original and the television series to produce a new tale that would serve as the start of a new franchise.
Henry Cavill is the only actor in the Highlander remake cast who has been officially announced. Since 2021, Cavill has committed to the Highlander project, working with Chad Stahelski as director.
There were rumors of actors like Vinnie Jones and the late Ray Stevenson to play the main villain, Kurgan, in the reboot. Dave Bautista was an earlier candidate for the role and could easily still play the intimidating villain. However, there are no confirmed reports about the cast other than the 40-year-old actor.
The 1986 film Highlander told the tale of Connor MacLeod, an immortal warrior born in the Scottish Highlands who could only be killed by beheading. MacLeod wants to vanquish his adversaries because they want to take his title when he is killed.
