It’s not uncommon for actors to go beyond what they are comfortable with in order to do their job, only to regret it later. The Count Dracula actor, Nicolas Cage was put in a similar situation when he was filming for Vampire’s Kiss. Although it was his very idea, he did not enjoy doing it in real life that much. Cage is now an experienced vampire, and thus has better knowledge after playing the immortal in quite a few movies.

This time, while promoting his new horror comedy Renfield, featuring again as a vampire, the actor revealed the creative choices he took that he would never do again.

Nicolas Cage will never eat cockroaches again

The prolific actor, Nicolas Cage, often finds himself playing many children’s go-to horrifying fictitious character- a vampire, in films like Vampire’s Kiss, and Dracula. In a recent interview, promoting his new movie Renfield, Cage revealed what he regretted the most while filming his 1988 movie, Vampire’s Kiss. He was reminded of his mistake by his co-star’s character in his new movie, who plays R.M. Renfield, the right-hand man of Dracula, who is also an insect eater. So naturally, when asked if Cage offered any advice to Nicholas Hoult for playing his part, he got vivid flashbacks of the time he gobbled roaches on camera and regretted it badly afterward.

Cage said,

“I’ll never do that again–I’m sorry I did it at all”

He was also seen elaborating on his decision in the DVD Commentary of the film. That is where his character is seen swallowing a raw egg while eating live cockroaches, thinking it would be very lame to do otherwise. The actor explained,

“I saw it as a business decision because when people see the cockroach go in my mouth… [they] really react,”

He then further revealed that to honor his commitment to his role, the director played a prank on him which led him to munch on the gnarly insects twice on camera. He said,

“I ate [roaches] twice because the director did it as a prank,”

The actor then concluded with his interesting take on ending world hunger. He jokingly exclaimed,

“If you could get rid of your fear, your phobia of eating insects, you could solve world starvation,–High protein, no fat, excellent nutrients, abundance. They’re everywhere! But nope — not gonna happen.”

Although the advice might work, it is now known that whatever happens, he will never eat a cockroach ever again, not even as a last resort.

The eternal vampire, Nicolas Cage returns

It may seem comical if someone finds out how many times the legend has portrayed a vampire on screen. Some people now also may believe he is truly a vampire and others won’t even blame them. This could have only one plausible explanation as to why Nicolas Cage is drawn toward the undead time and again. His own fascination with the supernatural might just be one reason. Prior to this, he has expressed his interest in ghosts, UFOs, and other paranormal phenomena in many instances. Perhaps this fascination extends to vampires as well, leading him to seek out roles in which he can explore this interest further.
