- He also recalled almost getting into a fight with Denzel Washington on the set of their movie.
Josh Brolin is easily one of the most prolific actors in Hollywood, but he has had his struggles too. His struggles mainly arose from his drug and alcohol addiction. While he is not the first person to have dealt with this sort of problem, he might be one of the few who have redeemed themselves and changed their life’s trajectory.
Brolin has been candid about his struggles with substance abuse in the past. He has openly discussed his experiences with drugs and alcohol and how they impacted his life and career. He has done it once again during a recent interview in which he detailed his experience of using a tough drug that seemingly left him in an embarrassing state.
Josh Brolin Recounted His Experience of Using This Drug for the First Time
Josh Brolin began his career with TV films and guest roles on TV shows before landing his first notable role as Brandon Walsh in the 1985 adventure comedy, The Goonies. His acting career was literally in the trenches for almost 15 years, from 1990 to 2006. His comeback was in the Coen brothers’ neo-Western crime thriller, No Country for Old Men.
Brolin’s career saw a huge resurgence with the biopics about US President George W. Bush and the assassination of city supervisor, Danny White, W. and Milk. The 2010s were just as incredible as he starred in some big-budget films like Jonah Hex, Men in Black 3, and Gangster Squad. Most notably, he has appeared as the supervillain Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
One thing that he has consistently discussed throughout his career is his struggles with drugs and alcohol. Recently, he has done it again in his interview on the In Depth with Graham Bensinger. He recounted his worst experience on a trip, stating that this was when he was 13 and had used LSD for the first time.
We ended up at Herb’s [Mike Herbert] house, what we called, we ended up calling the Herb estate, and uh yeah, and I ended up there alone, naked on the floor with Herb’s mom; throwing up in the kitchen. That’s what I remember, and I didn’t know if I was creating it in my brain because it was pretty powerful stuff.
As Brolin said, there is no telling if he actually ended up naked in front of his friend’s mother or if he just made it up under the influence of the drug. Either way, he emphasized that it was the “most hellish” experience one can imagine.
Josh Brolin Almost Got Into a Fight with Denzel Washington While Working with Him on American Gangster
After working on No Country for All Men, Brolin starred in 2007’s American Gangster, directed by Ridley Scott. He starred alongside Denzel Washington in the film and in the same conversation with Graham Bensinger, he revealed that they almost got into a fight because he did not realize that Washington was in character.
I put my hand on his shoulder and I said, ‘What’s the line?’ and he hits my hand off and he said, ‘Don’t ever f*cking put your hand on me.’ And I was like, ‘Holy shit, I’m gonna scrap with Denzel Washington. This is crazy.’ We’re not actors anymore … at least in my mind. In his mind, he was just doing his job.
When they were done with it, Brolin asked Washington if he was alright and the latter did the same in return which indicated to the Dune star that his co-star was just in character at the moment. Before recalling this incident, he had said that the two actors get along well now.
