Actress Anne Hathaway rose to fame by starring in The Princess Diaries. This was followed by her starring in a couple of family-oriented movies including Ella Enchanted. Hathaway then starred in one of the biggest commercial successes to date in the form of Devil Wears Prada alongside Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt.

The actress also starred as Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises which starred Christian Bale as Batman. She reportedly trained quite extensively to play the character and had Hedy Lamarr as her inspiration. Anne Hathaway says Spider-Man 4 did not make much progress before getting scrapped

Anne Hathaway recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. The actress spoke about her being one of the cast members for Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 before it was canceled in 2010. She said,

“I did not get into the costume and did not read a script past the audition sides. I got the part and yeah, it just..I think that’s probably more the producer’s story to tell than mine, should they ever decide to tell it.”

Hathaway continued,

“The Spider-Man universe has gone onto be so enormous and so thrilling. It’s just reinventing itself and all of those things, so I wouldn’t want to make more of it that is necessary.”

According to Movie Web, despite all the re-writing for the script, director Sam Raimi was not satisfied with them and told Sony that he could not meet their deadline and hence, decided to part ways with the project. In 2010, it was decided to cancel the project and reboot the franchise. This resulted in the The Amazing Spider-Man with actor Andrew Garfield.

Anne Hathaway believes she wouldn’t have been Catwoman if she was in Spider-Man 4

The actress later went on to star as Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. She explained that she believes if she had been a part of Spider-Man 4, she wouldn’t have had the opportunity to play Catwoman. Hathaway shared with Josh Horowitz on the podcast,

“The way I hold it is if that movie had gotten made, I don’t know if I would have considered because I don’t know if Nolan would’ve said, ‘No, no, she’s occupied in another universe’”.

She added,

“As an actor, you don’t know this on day one, but you learn to just go, ‘you know what? The right role finds the right person and sometimes it’s you and sometimes its not, so when it doesn’t happen just trust deeper and keep going, just keep going.”

Hathaway’s Catwoman and Bale’s Bruce Wayne were also the focus of the story which was said to be marked by trust, deception, and the shared goals of the two characters. The actress who trained extensively for the role was lauded for portraying the character with utmost depth.

Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman to date remains one of the most appreciated portrayals of the iconic DC Comic Book character in the franchise.
