“I feel I’m unveiling myself”: Marvel Failed 1 Actor More Than the Fans During MCU’s Entire Phase Four Arc
Marvel Cinematic Universe receiving backlash and criticism over its storyline has become quite common, considering the reception of its films lately, it has become a concerning element for the franchise. However, what’s intriguing is that they have significantly failed to strongly represent Benedict Wong’s Marvel character Wong, the master of mystic arts.
The English actor himself addressed how his character has been handled in the entertainment industry lately. Wong is a significant associate of Doctor Strange and a skilled sorcerer, who deserves a more compelling and representative arc in the MCU. The actor has portrayed the role in almost six movies, most of which are from Phase Four: the best opportunity for the makers, which they nonchalantly missed.

Marvel had an incredible chance to give Wong a better and more engaging storyline, reflecting on the significance of the character in the comic books and his representation. However, the MCU does not entirely rely on the books and is quick to incorporate their creative liberty by creating new origin stories. The same could have been implied for Wong to provide more weight to his role and arc. Being one of Doctor Strange’s allies, phase four could have had the strongest backstory for Wong, considering his involvement in almost every crucial scene.
While talking about his Netflix series 3 Body Problem, Benedict Wong known for playing Wong in the MCU shed light on the entertainment industry’s significant failure to represent him through projects. According to THR, the actor said:
“For the best part of eight years, the business didn’t know how to properly represent me. I feel I’m unveiling myself.”
Wong mentioned resonating with his character Da Shi in the series and how the character holds similarities with him. Wong’s comments remind us of his character’s portrayal in the MCU. Should the makers have crafted a better and more engaging storyline for Wong, the actor would have felt being accurately represented. However, as Benedict Wong mentioned, after almost eight years, he can resonate with a Netflix series character.

Benedict Wong Wanted a Standalone Series of Wong
Soon after Benedict Wong was introduced as Wong in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he became a fan-favorite character. The actor himself hinted at his desire to have a solo MCU series that would entirely focus on Wong. While talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Wong revealed that Kevin Feige once mistakenly emailed him saying that the franchise was “fast becoming the WCU” or Wong Cinematic Universe. The Marco Polo star added:
“I’ve got the email, I’m seriously considering getting it as wallpaper.”
Considering Wong’s involvement in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and the connection with Abomination and the MCU’s newest sensation Madisynn, it will be intriguing if Marvel crafts a series focusing on the Sorcerer Supreme. However, since the franchise seems to be occupied with other notable projects, there has been no confirmation about Benedict Wong having a solo series.
