James Gunn, renowned for his contributions to both the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the DCU, recently disclosed his top five favorite comic book movies in a revealing interview.

In an interview with GQ, the filmmaker ranked his favorite comic book films, clearing his personal preferences. Interestingly, Gunn revealed that two of his favorites are not just superhero movies, but based on graphic novels.

He mentioned 2003’s Oldboy, which is a Korean movie that reinvented action and ushered in the new era of Korean cinema.

Another graphic novel adaptation that made it to Gunn’s list is David Cronenberg’s A History of Violence. Upon watching it, he confessed he was unaware that it was a graphic novel adaptation, which influenced him. He explained,

“I was influenced by the History of Violence. I was influenced by the way that it didn’t play like an action movie. You don’t look at it and say, Oh, that’s an action movie. But if you watch the way Cronenberg shoots the action sequences in the movie, it’s spectacular and deft.”

The director also shared his admiration for Deadpool, a superhero movie that he considered a perfect adaptation of a comic book with more heart than the comics have.

The iconic superhero movie Superman directed by the late Richard Donner and starring Christopher Reeves was his second favorite. The director admitted that the film changed his life, just like Star Wars: A New Hope did.

Moreover, the writer considers Into the Spider-Verse the best superhero movie ever made, with no bad beats throughout the film, pointing out that the screenplay is focused and pointed all the way through. It’s noteworthy that Gunn’s favorite comic book movies don’t include any recent DC movies, despite his role as a co-CEO of DC Studios.

His honorable mentions include the likes of Deadpool 2, V for Vendetta, and the groundbreaking Iron Man from 2008, which kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Additionally, he expressed admiration for Spider-Man: Homecoming, revealing his love for high-rise movies.

Interestingly, he acknowledged the possibility of second-guessing his choices, he explained,

“There were a lot of movies I really loved that almost made the list, but I had to choose five. And so, you know, I may wake up tomorrow and think I made an enormous mistake that I can’t take back.”

Previously, The Suicide Squad creator revealed exciting plans for the DC Universe. Despite recent changes behind the scenes, he revealed a new image for the DC brand.

The announcement outlined a grand vision for an interconnected DC Universe, comprising 10 movies and TV shows (for now). The goal is to release two movies and two HBO Max shows annually, creating an expansive and immersive universe for fans to explore.
