“I open that Grammy envelope and it said ‘Adele'”: Fast and Furious Star Dwayne Johnson Desperately Wanted to Surprise a Popular Fan, Went to “great lengths” For Her
Dwayne Johnson, known for starring in the highly successful Fast and Furious franchise once went above and beyond to surprise a long-time fan of his. And that fan is none other than multiple times Grammy-winning musician Adele.
Adele has been a fan of Johnson’s since his pro wrestling days and has often made her admiration known. Johnson has been aware of Adele’s adoration towards him, and the pair have tried to meet up but couldn’t due to their busy schedules. But Johnson once saw an opening and took it. And ended up surprising Adele.
Dwayne Johnson’s Big Surprise for Adele
At the Grammys 2023, Dwayne Johnson made a grand appearance. It was kept under the wraps as The Rock wanted to surprise his long-time fan, Adele.
Sometime near the end of the Award ceremony, host Trevor Noah introduced Johnson to the audience. The Rock then walked over to Adele’s table. The Rolling in the Deep singer was pleasantly surprised and could not stop smiling. The pair shared an embrace and talked a bit before Johnson went on to present an award.
Johnson revealed that on realizing he would be able to attend the Grammys, he started to put together a plan to surprise the London-born singer. She has been a fan of his since he started making a name for himself in the WWE, and Johnson wanted to return the love.
Johnson talked with Variety, revealing how he pulled off the big surprise, he said:
“We wanted to do something special for Adele. We were trying to figure out something to do that was going to be fun and surprise her, and we had kicked around ideas all week. The key to a surprise like that is to actually keep it a surprise. Myself and the Grammys went to great lengths to make sure that Adele was authentically surprised in the moment, and she was. It was just a great surprise and I was able to chat with her a little bit and her boyfriend, Rich Paul.”
The efforts made by Johnson and the crew behind an event as spectacular as the Grammys paid off. Adele’s delight in meeting The Rock was evident on her face.
The Rock and Adele are Both Fans of Each Other
The Rock was also there to present an award, which was coincidentally won by Adele. Getting an award from Johnson was not a big deal for just Adele. Johnson himself is a huge fan of the British singer. Gushing about Adele, Johnson told Variety:
“I know that she is a very big fan of mine and has made that clear publicly many times. But I’ve got to tell you, I am a huge fan of hers, as well — her music, her journey, her openness and directness in how she speaks. I’ve always admired that about her.”
Moreover, Johnson believes the universe was at play when he got the chance to present the award that Adele won, he said (via Variety):
“And talk about the universe meeting our friendship halfway: I get up onstage and I open that Grammy envelope and it said ‘Adele.’ So that’s why I was able to say, ‘Get up here best friend, Adele!’ It was such a special night.”
