Both of them have starred together in Michael Mann’s psychological thriller, Collateral, where Cruise and Jamie Foxx were in the leading roles, and Pinkett was cast in a supporting role.
Their professional meet-up not only forged on-screen chemistry but also led to a genuine and delightful off-screen friendship. The pairs also have spotted together and crossed paths at various industry events.
Pinkett initially used to doubt herself, often tormented by feelings of insecurity and inadequacy. She confessed that being a kid she didn’t think of herself as “pretty.” Pinkett in an interview with Redbook magazine, explained that it was Tom Cruise who helped her to dismiss all the doubts and encouraged her to overcome her judgments and anxieties.
“I used to believe I wasn’t pretty because, growing up, I was never told that I was. Actually, it was Tom Cruise who taught me how to get rid of those doubts. He said, “Every time I compliment you, you always reject it. You need to stop doing that. Just say, ‘Thank you.'” So, I’ve learned to accept a compliment”.

Pinkett also recounted that she used to turn down compliments, as her insecurities often prevented her from embracing her beauty. In the interview, The Matrix actress recalled how Cruise encouraged her to accept any kind words that came her way. His guidance truly helped her learn to comply with her power and worth within herself.

In a recent interview with Today, she disclosed that she and Smith had been leading separated lives for the past 7 years, as they were facing difficulties in relationships and were struggling to figure out how to be in a partnership.
“I think it’s just a matter of not being ready yet. Still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in a partnership, and in regard to how we present that to people, you know? And we hadn’t figured that out.”
Pinkett further explains that by 2016 they “were just exhausted from trying and were struck by the world of fantasy”, where they had certain ideas and expectations about each other that should be in their relationship, which probably didn’t align with their reality.
