“I’m down for that”: Tsunami of Hate Against ‘The Idol’ Hasn’t Changed Lily-Rose Depp’s Mind About Doing Raunchy Roles
- Lily-Rose Depp career saw new heights after her starring role in the flop HBO show, The Idol.
- Depp is not opposed to doing raunchy roles despite the negative response to The Idol.
- The King actress believes that The Idol prepared her for the Gothic horror film, Nosferatu.
Ever since its release and subsequent downfall, Lily-Rose Depp has made it abundantly clear that she has no regrets about starring in The Idol. The series, a product of HBO trying to do something different, was so underwhelming that it had to be canceled immediately after the release of the first season.
Its failure was all very obvious and creator Sam Levinson’s reputation took a huge hit. However, Depp has been defending it with her life. Anytime it comes up – and it always does – the actress insists that doing the show was a learning experience for her, but not for the same reasons as some might think. Her role in the show was admittedly raunchy, and that has not deterred her from doing more such roles.
Lily-Rose Depp is down for doing more roles like the one in The Idol
The daughter of Hollywood star Johnny Depp and French movie star and musician Vanessa Paradis, Lily-Rose Depp began taking an interest in acting as a teenager and has not looked back since. Some of her most notable roles are in the movies like The King, The Dancer, and A Faithful Man.
However, her fame saw new heights when she began starring in The Idol opposite the famous musician The Weeknd. What started as a passion project quickly turned into a nightmare when it failed to impress the audience and suffered from backlash so strong that it had to be canceled within months after the first season was released.
Usually, when a project fails, artists tend to keep their distance from that kind of thing. The same cannot be said about Depp who told Josh Horowitz on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast that she would not mind doing a role like that again.
We always knew it was going to be controversial and you got to be expecting that in a way and that’s okay like I’m interested in that kind of work I’m down for that and I think we were also like pushing like society’s buttons I think intentionally a little bit in a way and of course it was received in the way that it was but it’s okay.
It is good to see that Depp stands for what she believes in regardless of what everyone else has got to say. Hopefully, she will get to do more of the work she is so passionate about.
Lily-Rose Depp claims her work in The Idol prepared her for Nosferatu
Nosferatu sees Depp in the role of Ellen Hutter, a woman who summons Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård) to be her companion. The only problem now is that the Count is hell-bent on making her his bride although she is already married to Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult). There are scenes of simulated s*x between her and the Count through a psychic connection.
Depp told IndieWire that her turn in as Jocelyn in the HBO show prepared her for the physical and vocal elements of those scenes in the Gothic horror film.
I definitely feel like the physical work that I did on The Idol, and the emotional work as well, definitely played a part in preparing me for this one [Nosferatu], because it just taught me so much. Honestly, [The Idol] was a real growth period for me as an actor and as a person. I feel like I just learned so much doing The Idol that I carried [it] with me to Nosferatu.
She admitted that Jocelyn and Ellen are two very different characters and there is also a stark contrast between the two worlds, but they are both demanding roles which is what she is interested in exploring.
