“I’m just like, Oh Lord!”: Chace Crawford’s Honest Thoughts About His NSFW Scenes in The Boys Are Too Relatable
Spoiler Alert!
If there is any show in recent times that has raised the bar over what can be aired on screen, then it has to be The Boys. Over the years, the show has featured many bizarre and NSFW scenes that shocked viewers. The fourth season is also not behind in this regard, as it offers its own share of weirdness and uncomfortability.
The Deep, portrayed by Chace Crawford, recently talked about being uncomfortable in some of the scenes of The Boys. His character has been through a lot of things, often in violent and NSFW ways. However, among all these situations, Crawford has successfully managed to portray the humor as well as the darkness of his character brilliantly.
Chace Crawford Didn’t Want to Do One Scene in The Boys Season 3
As the series progresses, The Deep’s story becomes darker, and his personality becomes more prone to jealousy and aggression. Chace Crawford had no problem portraying the changes in his character. However, in one particular scene in season 3’s Herogasm episode, he had to get involved in a sexual act with an octopus, Ambrosia.
In an interview on The Tonight Show, Crawford revealed that that one scene made him reconsider what he was doing with his life. Crawford said,
I’m just like, “Oh, Lord. I hope my parents don’t see this. I’m not doing that. There was one where I open up the script and, I mean The Deep has a side mistress. It’s an octopus, right. The only thing he connects to emotionally is the sea life.
And so he’s got this octopus, and Eric Kripke, our creator, was like, “Have you seen ‘My Octopus Teacher’?” And I was like, “Yeah, I have seen ‘My Octopus Teacher.'” And anyway, I have to get intimate with the octopus in one of the scenes.
Speaking about the scene in an earlier interview with Men’s Health, Crawford revealed that he had an emotional breakdown thinking about the various camera angles they would use to shoot him and how much would be too much for him. However, showrunner Eric Kripke understood his concern and helped him with the situation.
But this is not the only NSFW scene that troubled Crawford. In the series premiere of Season 4, Antony Starr’s character Homelander forces The Deep to indulge in a sexual act with A-Train. While talking with IndieWire, Crawford humorously recalled the fun shooting of the scene with Kripke.
Tilda Swinton’s Ambrosius’ Role in The Boys Season 4
There is much more than just the NSFW scenes in The Deep’s story in terms of character development. His octopus lover, Ambrosius, portrayed by Tilda Swinton, has been a minor character in the third season, but her importance has seemingly increased in the fourth season.
Swinton’s Ambrosius is a much more complicated character who seeks love and genuine connection from The Deep. All her interactions with him are tragic and filled with her longing for some romance when she tells him to escape from Vought and Homelander with her.
Ambrosius may cause The Deep to turn against Homelander and become a spy for The Boys. As Homelander continues with his hostility, the threat of a civil war increases, and The Deep’s hatred for Homelander, his loyalty to Vought, and his desire for freedom and love might land him at a crossroads.
If The Deep does go against Homelander and become a spy for The Boys, he will become an asset in the revolt, which will ultimately give him a chance to redeem his identity as Kevin.
The Boys Season 4 is now streaming on Prime Video.
