“I’m not the character I signed on to play”: Jeremy Renner Hated His Marvel Role That Made Him Beg to Studio to Kill His Character
Jeremy Renner got his breakthrough role in Dahmer, but his decade-long stint at Marvel earned him an impressive fan following. Discussing The Avengers, Renner shared his concerns while signing the contract for the MCU film. Renner’s casting as Hawkeye was indeed a surprising decision back then, but over the years, Renner has left no stone unturned to establish the character firmly.
Jeremy Renner Dissatisfied With His Character In The Avengers
Critically acclaimed movie, The Avengers was a box office success with hardly any pitfalls. However, did have his share of grievances from the film. Renner expressed how he has not been happy with how his character came across in the finished film.
Jeremy Renner shared his dissent saying,
“For 90% of the movie, I’m not the character I signed on to play. It’s kind of a vacancy. [ He’s ] not even a bad guy, because there’s not really a consciousness to him. To take away who that character is and just have him be this robot, essentially, and have him be this minion for evil that Loki uses… I was limited, you know what I mean? I was a terminator in a way. Fun stunts. But is there any sort of emotional content or thought process? No.”
In fair terms, Renner’s concern is totally worthy as Hawkeye does fall under Loki’s spell right at the beginning with the character barely having time and opportunity to establish his identity before becoming a pawn in the God of Mischief’s game.
Further, Renner continued, “Is [ Hawkeye ] working for SHIELD or not? There’s a lot of unanswered questions, even for me.” Well, maybe the unanswered questions deserve an explanation in a standalone film for Hawkeye.
Why Was Jeremy Renner Hesitant To Join The MCU As Hawkeye?
Jeremy Renner has gained immense fandom and praise for his role as Hawkeye in the MCU film, The Avengers. But the Avengers star once revealed that he had almost passed on the role of Hawkeye in the MCU because of his age. It has been over a decade that Jeremy Renner has been playing expert archer Hawkeye/Clint Barton in the MCU and has apparently gone from being a side character to becoming a fan favorite.
In fact, his fandom is so deeply embedded that Hawkeye’s absence from Avengers: Infinity War turned into a controversy overnight and fans were fuming with rage. The Oscar-nominated actor has delivered multiple memorable films and characters but still, he is best remembered as Hawkeye among his fans.
Well, it was surprising to know that Renner had nearly turned down the role when Marvel first approached him. After all, it was his doubts regarding his age that refrained him for a moment from playing the superhero character which he eventually did.
