This year’s Cannes Film Festival received its share of controversy before the event even took place. The news of Johnny Depp‘s latest film Jeanne Du Barry‘s screening and his appearance at the event attracted a backlash. Naturally, it was all due to the domestic violence allegations stacked against him by his ex-wife Amber Heard.

He might have won the defamation case against Heard but all the controversy he has been associated with has made him unpopular among many people. Sure some fans still have his back and are more than ready to give him the benefit of the doubt but the allegations have brought him into a negative light. But despite all of the backlash Cannes still went forward with their plan to screen Depp’s latest project.
He even received a 7-minute long-standing ovation for his role as Louis XV in the historical drama. Showering praises on her dad, Lily-Rose Depp who was also present at the festival for her HBO series The Idol, shared with Entertainment Tonight,
“I’m super happy for him. I’m super excited,”
As for the 23-year-old, she also received a 5-minute standing ovation for her raunchy and controversial series. However, some criticized how the series’ characters especially the one played by Lily-Rose Depp showed too much skin repeatedly according to The Hollywood Reporter.
What Is Johnny Depp’s Latest Movie All About?
The 2023 historical drama Jeanne du Barry directed and written by Maïwenn is the first project of Johnny Depp since his highly controversial defamation trial last year. In the film, Depp plays the role of Louis XV while Maïwenn plays the titular character Jeanne du Barry.
The story revolves around the protagonist Maïwenn character, a working-class woman in an impoverished condition determined to climb the social ladder.
