According to a Twitter post, the actor was killed in a “freak escalator accident.” The rumor spread swiftly. A Twitter post with a doctored photograph of The Guardian’s headline appears to be where the rumor first surfaced. Renner, 52, was described in the photograph as having “tragically succumbed to injuries sustained in an escalator accident, passing away peacefully in a San Jose hospital.”

The phony article also wrongfully claimed to have been written by Sian Cain, the deputy culture editor at The Guardian. The image that sparked the rumor was a doctored screenshot of an authentic article from The Guardian. The well-known snow plow accident involving Renner that happened on New Year’s Day was detailed in the article, which Sian Cain wrote and had it published on March 29, 2023.
