Is Sacha Baron Cohen Making His MCU Debut as Mephisto—What is His Mystery Man Role in Ironheart?
Sacha Baron Cohen is a British actor and comedian known for his sarcastic and provocative style of comedy. His movies, especially Borat, were a cultural phenomenon in which he used his acerbic style of comedy to confront social and political issues. In recent days, Baron Cohen has been rumored to be making his MCU debut as the iconic villain Mephisto, which was a viral sensation when WandaVision first debuted, speculating his sinister presence in the popular show.
Sacha Baron Cohen officially confirmed debut in MCU’s Ironheart
Sacha Baron Cohen who had been speculated to be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has now been officially confirmed to make his debut in the upcoming Disney+ series Ironheart. According to the report from Comic Book, in the copyright filing, Boron Cohen’s character was listed as ‘Mystery Man’, which would have been done with the intention of conceiving his actual role.
Previously, there were reports that The Dictator star would be debuting through the character Mephisto, the villain whom everyone eagerly wanted to see in Elizabeth Olsen’s series. However, Baron Cohen’s name didn’t come to be associated with the character until later.
Mephisto is depicted as a demonic supervillain with immense supernatural abilities. Created by Stan Lee and John Buscema, it was introduced as the constant nemesis of Silver Surfer and Ghost Rider. Mephisto has a long comic book history, having appeared in comics for over 50 years.
It remains uncertain whether Marvel will officially name the Mystery Man as Mephisto in the forthcoming Dominique Thorne series.
WandaVision writer already dismissed the rumors about Mephisto
However, WandaVision head writer Jac Schaeffer confided that she didn’t have any knowledge of the character while writing the series. “There was never any conscious intention on my part to create any Mephisto red herrings because I didn’t know who Mephisto was until I started doing press,” Schaeffer said in a 2020 interview with Mashable.
“Why did we talk about the devil so much? That’s a real coincidence. He wasn’t ever part of our storytelling conversations. We were very clear that the big bad is grief. And then the external bad is Agatha. So as a viewer and as a lover of the show and the characters, I didn’t want anything more than that.”
She also added that she didn’t see any connection between the devil Mephisto and the narrative of the story, where the focus was on the grief and vengeance of Agatha Harkness.
Mephisto will potentially come for Parker Robbins in Ironheart
The Ironheart revolves around the story of genius inventor Riri Williams, who creates her superpower suit and takes on the superhero identity Ironheart. Dominique Thorne is set to reprise her role of Ironheart from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Everybody will be thinking about the role of a demon in a series like Ironheart, which predominantly focuses on a technological-based theme. This can be explained by the introduction of another character, Parker Robbins, portrayed by Antony Ramos in the series.
Robbins who is also known as Hood, possesses supernatural ability granted by his magical hooded cloak, and its power is said to have originated from the realm of Mephisto, the Bad Place. Baron Cohen, who enters as Mephisto in the series, reveals Hood as his dark source, which culminates into a significant plot twist.
Marvel Studios’ Ironheart is expected to be released by September 2025.
