A fire broke out on the set of the film, completely destroying the set of the MacNeil family home. However, there was one notable exception that, the only room left standing intact when the flames were extinguished was Regan’s exorcised bedroom. The cause of the fire was a faulty electrical connection. After the incident, director William Friedkin allegedly found a mysterious message written on a piece of debris, stating, “The set was burned”. Feels too creepy right? But this isn’t enough several of the main actors reportedly suffered injuries. Ellen Burstyn, who played Chris MacNeil, injured her coccyx when she was thrown to the floor by the possessed Regan played by Linda Blair.
The Deaths Lead People to Believe the Curse
The deaths of the actors made it worst, Jack MacGowran, the actor who portrayed Burke Dennings, passed away on January 30, 1973, during the filming of The Exorcist. He died from complications related to influenza. And Vasiliki Maliaros, who played Father Karras’s mother in the film, passed away on February 9, 1973, after filming was completed. It is believed that she died of natural causes but no doubt these deaths were soon after the film.
Some actors even said that they felt uneasy during the filming. They even claimed that strange occurrences and accidents seemed to happen more frequently during the production. Given the film’s subject matter, several priests were brought to the set to bless the cast and crew and perform exorcism rituals to dispel any potential evil or negative energy.
But it’s essential to approach such claims with a skeptical perspective and understand that the film’s popularity and its horror theme might have contributed to the legends and myths surrounding its production.
