James Gunn is an American filmmaker and studio executive who started his career as a screenwriter. Gunn is also the director and writer of Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Gunn is also the co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios and the third Marvel Cinematic Universe director to play a part in the film he is directing. He has an amazingly long list of achievements and is appreciated for writing and producing some of the best and all-time favorite comic book movies.
In a recent talk with GQ, his answer was a great surprise when asked about his top 5 favorite comic book movies. Gunn’s list does not include an MCU entry but does have some shockingly different choices.
James Gunn Reveals His Top Five Comic Book Movies
While Gunn’s list of favorite comic book movies leaves out the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the surprising choices made it clear that Gunn has quite the experience in the comic book movie medium. His list entries were Deadpool, Oldboy, A History of Violence, Superman (1978), and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Deadpool is a 2016 R-rated superhero movie starring Ryan Reynolds and directed by Tim Miller. Deadpool was a massive hit for 20th Century Fox and finally hit the screens after a decade-long wait. It is also in Gunn’s top three favorite list. The movie was highly appreciated and loved by fans and critics. It became the second-highest-grossing film in the larger X-Men franchise and the third-highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.
James Gunn is well-known for his ability to strike a perfect balance between comedy, drama, and action to elevate his comic book movies to the next level. The filmmaker is accustomed to breaking the norms and adding innovative elements to his films. To this date, Deadpool stands apart as one of the best comic book movies of this era and has, with time, inspired many other similar movies to come up.
Other among the top picks were Superman (1978) and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse. Both movies fascinated Gunn with their adaptation of comics in their own unique way which the director admires. The shocking part is that none of these movies are from the mainstream MCU or DCU.
James Gunn States Oldboy is one of the best Comic Book Movies.
During an interview with GQ, James Gunn was asked to rank his top five comic book movies. While spilling out his answer, Gunn ensured that the comic book genre encapsulates more than simply the superheroes.
One of his top picks was Park Chan-Wook’s Oldboy, and said that it was initially unknown to him that this film was based on a comic book, that was a Japanese manga by Garon Tsuchiya.
Gunn said about the movie,
“It reinvented action, and it really ushered in the new era of Korean cinema, which has continued to this day. They still probably make the best action movies in the world. But as a movie, it’s just incredibly cinematic, incredibly colorful, really kind of gross but also beautiful. And shocking at the end… it works on every level.”
One must appreciate the taste and the thought of the DC Studio’s boss behind selecting the movie to be one of his favorites.
