The latest podcast series called Words + Music by Audible helps fans understand the depth of their favorite singers and some poignant moments in their life that make them want to make music. While listening to our favorite songs, rarely do we stop to think about what made the singers feel so deeply about life that they penned such beautiful lyrics.
Well, now we might get some answers. In the latest episode of the series, singer Mariah Carey spoke about her life when she wrote the song Portrait from her album Caution. She recalled on the episode,
I don’t know another word other than real for what that song ‘Portrait’ meant to me at that moment. I was completely isolated by myself and saying, let me get this off my chest and we’re going to end the album with this. It’s still kind of a deep song to listen to.
In a conversation with Variety, she further dove into her emotions and life when she penned the song. Portrait went on to become a massive hit amongst fans. She even claims that the song helped her work through some issues in life. It all started becoming clear to her as she wrote the lyrics of Portrait and eventually released it for her fans. Subsequently, Carey was able to walk the fine line between the sadness of the lyrics and the upbeat music to create a masterpiece like Portrait.

The singer promoted the Audible episode on her X account by resharing the official episode post. She is usually very open and expressive as an artist, so this even deeper look at her process and music was appreciated by all her fans. It’s refreshing to see such a dedicated and loyal fandom in the day and age where loyalties keep shifting. Carey has been in the industry for such a long time and it’s great to see her getting the appreciation she deserves.
