Mariah Carey is a phenomenal music artist. She was recently honored with the Global Impact Award along with Lenny Kravitz from the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective almost two decades after winning a Grammy. According to the media outlet The Hollywood Reporter, the singer’s reaction was priceless after winning the award, Carey said-
“Is this a real Grammy? I haven’t seen one in soooooo long. It’s weird. I don’t know. We’ll figure out what this is later.”
The crowd cheered for the 34-time Grammy-nominated singer at the Fairmont Century Plaza while she was honored with the Global Impact Award. Mariah Carey got emotional and recalled how she had to fight to sing and write the kind of song she had always wanted to sing. She said-
“When I first started in the music business, I was often told to conform to certain expectations. I was not encouraged to focus on my love for Black music. It took countless arguments, endless tantrums… and mostly unwavering determination but, eventually, I was able to reveal my authentic self.”
She further added-
“I accept this award on behalf of every person who has ever felt silenced or marginalized, who has ever been told their voice doesn’t matter. Your truth matters.”
