Charlize Theron talks about how the industry made her feel belittled
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Charlize Theron opened up about her experience with a male director. Her experience of being an action-driven actress has led her to a lot of roles that involve skin-tight suits. Naturally, the film industry has recently started to understand that these sexualized suits are extremely stereotypical and sexist. As we can observe with her appearance in Atomic Blonde and Mad Max: Fury Road, the dress does not matter as long as the action and acting are on par.
“I remember one movie, in particular, this male director who just kept bringing me in, fitting after fitting after fitting, and it was just so obvious that it was to do with my sexuality and how f—able they could make me in the movie. And when I started out, that was just kind of the norm.”
Her unfortunate experience with these types of situations is the reason why the actress has become a face for feminism in the industry. THe actress continued about her experience by stating it makes her feel belittled.
“Having some guy make you have a fitting almost in front of them — stuff like that, it’s really belittling.”
Charlize Theron demonstrated her cultivated power by defending herself and other female professionals in the field. Thanks to women in leadership positions in the industry like Charlize Theron, the days of males getting their way with women in Hollywood are gradually passing away.
