Curry identifies as a lesbian, and her portrayal of a conspiracy-minded homophobe Firecracker in The Boys was highly appreciated by the audience as well as critics. The actress explains in an interview why she likes to play a character that is opposite to who she is in real life. Valorie Curry recently spoke about creating boundaries with fans who sometimes forget that they are just actors playing a character on-screen.

Valorie Curry says She Loves that She Gets to Play Firecracker on The Boys

Actress Valorie Curry first came out as pansexual on Instagram in 2019 during National Coming Out Day but now identifies as a lesbian. In her interview with THR, she explained that even though she should be repelled from playing Firecracker on The Boys, she loves that she is playing her on-screen. Curry said,

It sounds so gross to say, but I really connected with her right off the bat. I am happy to play somebody who is so vocally anti-trans and homophobic. It should be somebody from the community who’s getting to make a clown out of her. So there isn’t any ambiguity.

The actress added that she is a big fan of the surprise bisexuality of a veteran character of The Boys, noting that she loves casual bisexuality in TV and books, when somebody just dates one person and they are dating another and no one needs to talk about it. Curry also adds about Firecracker that her childhood trauma explains so much about her behavior, pointing right or wrong; Firecracker is someone who believes that she has been marginalized.

Valorie Curry echoes the same emotions in her interview with Advocate, as she says,

I love that I get to play her because I think it should be one of our own that gets to make an a** out of her, that gets to satirize her and make a clown out of her. And also, to lampoon these people and their absurdity and their ignorance and their violence, I’m glad that it’s coming from within the community, getting to take those shots.

Created by Erick Kripke, The Boys stars Antony Starr, Chace Crawford, Erin Moriarty, Karl Urban, Tomer Capone, and more. The show has been received very well since its first season, with critics and the audience praising the performances, storyline, and fact that it dares to take up real issues and use them accordingly. The Boys’ final and fifth season is expected to premiere in 2026.

Valorie Curry Urges Fans to Not Cross Their Boundaries

The actress recently appeared at Comic-Con Northern Ireland, Belfast. Where Comic-Con is usually a place where fans get to meet their favorite characters and celebrate their respective fandoms, sometimes some fans tend to go overboard. They forget that the actors are also human beings, and it’s just a mere act that they’ve been putting up on-screen for their entertainment.

Valorie Curry shared a video online addressing one such an incident where not only a fan made her feel uncomfortable, but when denied from doing an act, the fan got angry. She said that she’d like to talk about the boundaries that fans need to understand when they meet the actors who play their favorite characters on the show.

I know people saw a character that I played do pretty extreme things on The Boys. I don’t care if you’re in costume; I don’t care if you’re in character; it’s not okay, and it’s not funny to demand those things from me in person at my booth. It’s not okay. And frankly to the person who did that repeatedly today, I made it pretty clear that it wasn’t okay and that only seem to make this person and their friend angry.

The Boys actress added that she didn’t think she needed to explain it, but she was deeply uncomfortable with the entire situation, adding that it was quite clear that she was uncomfortable. Curry shared that she wants to be able to do conventions because she enjoys meeting fans and talking to them. She made it very clear that she won’t be able to do it anymore if people keep acting in a way to demand things from her, as it makes her feel very uncomfortable.

Curry noted that no one was laughing at the fan’s request. However, she didn’t forget to thank the ones who were on their best behavior, adding that everyone’s been very respectful and kind, which she appreciates. She sends a clear message to the fans who will get to meet her in future by stating that if they think demanding something in regards to her character would be funny, then it won’t be.

She lastly concluded by urging fans to think mindfully about what they’re going to talk to her about before they walk up to her.

The Boys is available to stream on Prime Video.
