The Welsh actor is also known for his association with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He portrayed the role of Odin, the former king of Asgard and the father of Hela and Thor in Marvel’s Thor trilogy from 2011 to 2017. The veteran actor came forward with his experience working with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Anthony Hopkins revealed his character Odin and how it was only limited to a small screen time.

Anthony Hopkins Opens Up On His Role In Marvel’s Thor

The Oscar-winning actor has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic for the past seven years. Recently the 85-year-old actor labeled his stint with one of the biggest franchises in the world as- “pointless acting,” as he used to spend maximum time filming in front of the green screen for the CGI purpose. Anthony Hopkins has been associated with Marvel with three installments based on the Thunder God, Thor named- Thor in 2011, Thor: Dark World in 2013, and Thor: Ragnarok in 2017. 

Recently, during an interview with the media outlet The New Yorker, The Silence Of The Lambs actor spoke about the good and bad impact of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Hollywood. He went on to slam the billion-dollar franchise and said-

 “They put me in armor; they shoved a bead on me. Sit on the throne, shout a bit. If you’re sitting in front of a green screen, it’s pointless acting it,” mention the legendary actor.

Anthony Hopkins confessed that he was looking forward to his retirement when he was offered the role of Odin in the first Thor franchise. He mentioned in the book The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2021 about being offered the role by the Thor director Kenneth Branagh. He added-

“Branagh gave me back the chops to work. I was gonna give it up, really. But you see, Branagh won’t let you do that,” mentioned the actor. Working with Ken was quite an injection of new energy into my life. He seems to have that same infectious quality on everybody in the crew. His enthusiasm, his attitude, is so positive, that he brings out the best in everybody.”

Actors like Christian Bale and Elizabeth Olsen, who have been an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have also spoken against the franchise.

Anthony Hopkins Slams Marvel Cinematic Universe For Swallowing Hollywood

During an interview with The New Yorker, legendary actor Anthony Hopkins spoke about the effect of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on the rest of Hollywood. He mentioned how the billion-dollar franchise has ended up swallowing the rest of Hollywood as a whole with respect to stardom and good projects.

Chris Hemsworth, the ex-costar of Anthony Hopkins spoke about the comments during an interview with the British GQ-

“I’m thankful that I have been a part of something that kept people in cinemas. Now, whether or not those films were to the detriment of other films, I don’t know. I don’t love when we start scrutinizing each other when there’s so much fragility in the business and in this space of the arts as it is… I say that less to the directors who made those comments, who are all, by the way, still my heroes, and in a heartbeat I would leap to work with any of them.”

Directors like  Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino even spoke against the superhero franchise and the negative impact it has had on the entire movie industry. The Inglorious Bastards’ director went on to say-

“Part of the Marvelization of Hollywood is… you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters. But they’re not movie stars. Right? Captain America is the star. Or Thor is the star. I mean, I’m not the first person to say that. I think that’s been said a zillion times… but it’s like, you know, it’s these franchise characters that become a star.”

The Marvelization of Hollywood has been debated for a long time. According to notable actors and directors, the billion-dollar franchise has negatively impacted the movie industry and is incapable of generating stars on a larger scale.
