According to New York Magazine, which traced the word back to its origin stated, its popularity started in 2020 after Derradji tweeted about Maude Apatow. “Wait I just found out that the actress that plays Lexi is a nepotism baby omg? her mom is Leslie Mann and her dad is a movie director lol.” with this particular tweet, Derradji broke the internet and coined the term “nepo baby”. 

After netizens found the term nepo baby, every time a new such individual is revealed to the public, the internet expresses outrage over superficial pop-culture analysis of the right to opportunity. The discussion of legit inequality in the workplace irrespective of industries makes people even more furious over the concept of nepotism in the recent era.
