Former American footballer John David Washington decided to follow in his parents: footsteps and try his hand at acting. Although he started acting in 2010, he did not get a breakthrough until 2018 when he was cast as Ron Stallworth in Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman. This role earned him critical acclaim as he was not only nominated for a Golden Globe Award but also a Screen Actors Guild award.

Washington went on to star in legendary director Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi action thriller Tenet. The movie was released in 2020 and is one of the best sci-fi movies to date. The film’s cast along with the director stopped by on Good Morning America where The Creator star revealed the part of the movie that blew his mind.

John David Washington Was Shocked By One Particular Part Of Tenet

If there is one thing that has been established by now in the Hollywood entertainment industry, it is that any project that involves Christopher Nolan cannot be mediocre, let alone bad. Considering that the Oppenheimer director not only directed but also wrote and produced Tenet, it was a given that the movie was going to be one of the best movies of the year.

While talking on Good Morning America which is now posted on the YouTube page of Movieclips Trailers, John David Washington revealed the one thing that blew his mind away, saying:

“But some of the best work I’ve ever seen from an actor was from Kenneth Branagh [who was] also saying his lines backward but with a Russian accent. So, I’ve never seen anything like that before. It was insane. It was crazy, yeah.”

A crucial part of the movie was the inversion effect. The actors had to learn to perform backwards and this included nearly every single movement including the dialogues and stunts. The movie grossed $365.3 million against an estimated production budget of $205 million so it was not exactly profitable and received mixed reviews.

John David Washington used to be a running back for the United Football League’s Sacramento Mountain League so the transition to acting might have been a little difficult for him. Luckily, he had his father Denzel Washington to help him through the process.

In the interview with Good Morning America, Washington described his experience of working on the Tenet, saying:

“It was a great challenge for me, having a football background, being able to sort of unlearn what I’m used to doing. So, we were sort of discovering these moves together with the stunt coordinators, George Cottle, and company. It was a great experience. It was taxing on the body, but it was worth it for sure.”

The Amsterdam actor also revealed that he used an app to train to speak the dialogues backward. He said that the app was of great help to him as it used to say whatever was told to it backwards and then he would learn from there and say it to the app. He would have to check to make sure that he had done it right which made the whole process even harder.
