Even during the infamous trial against Amber Heard, according to his therapist, Johnny Depp struggled with benzodiazepines, stimulants, alcohol, and opioids. The former couple were together for a while before news of their troubled marriage and divorce broke.

According to reports, even though the Pirates of the Caribbean actor was in a recovery phase, he resumed drinking after meeting his ex-wife and co-star in the aforementioned 2011 movie.

Johnny Depp Resumed Drinking Alcohol After Meeting Amber Heard
Even during his contentious trial against Amber Heard, Johnny Depp‘s history of alcoholism and attempts to quit using drugs were brought up in court. Moreover, the extent of Depp’s drug and alcohol use was also been an important factor in the case.
But how did it all start?
Amber Heard and Johnny Depp first met on the set of the 2011 film, The Rum Diary. They began dating in 2012, following Depp’s split from his previous girlfriend, Vanessa Paradis. They got married in February 2015, after dating for a while.
The ex-couple separated in May 2016 and divorced in January 2017, following a highly publicized court battle. The matter was rekindled in 2019 when Depp sued Heard for defamation.
Sources claim that the 59-year-old actor, a former addict, has resumed drinking alcohol during The Rum Diary shoot. Even Johnny Depp’s testimony for his defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife included details about his history of alcoholism and drug abuse.
In 2019, Depp sued Amber Heard for defamation on the grounds that she had falsely claimed to be the victim of domestic abuse in a Washington Post op-ed. Heard denied the allegations and filed a countersuit, alleging that he had repeatedly attacked her, often in fits of rage brought on by drugs or alcohol abuse.
In 2011, the 37-year-old actress admitted to Vogue that working with Johnny Depp during The Rum was “torture”.

Where Did It All Start?
According to Johnny Depp, his first drug experimentation occurred when he was 11 years old. He had earlier claimed that his mother, Betty Sue Palmer had regularly abused him, his siblings, and his father verbally and physically. His mother would occasionally ask him to bring her a bottle of “nerve tablets“.
Young Depp was upset about his dysfunctional family and wanted to calm down. Thus, to “escape the chaotic nature of what we were going through,” he started taking the pills. Soon after, Depp started smoking marijuana and was “not shy” to try other drugs to “take the edge off.”
The idea that drugs couldn’t solve emotional problems was one of the underlying messages in Depp’s popular 1980s television series, 21 Jump Street. He stated:
“One day, you’ll have to face those feelings.”
Depp claimed that he was able to control his drug and alcohol use for many years, despite starting out young. He reportedly never used alcohol or other drugs to “party,” but rather as a coping mechanism for tension and stress.
