Johnny Depp’s Ex Lover Winona Ryder Vowed Not to Work With The Dark Knight Trilogy Star Due to This Reason
Johnny Depp’s name amongst the headlines appears as many times for his movies as due to the women in his life – even when he is completely away from the main event of the news.
The Depp title is usually in the news these days because of Lily-Rose Depp’s work (not for a good reason, mind!) in The Idol. Meanwhile, for the last few years, the Pirates of the Caribbean legend’s name has been mostly heard for his tricky relationship with Amber Heard and the aftermath of the romance.
In the early 90s, Winona Ryder, his partner, used to attract flashlights – and not just for their relationship.
Why Johnny Depp’s Ex Winona Ryder Hated the Filming of Bram Stoker’s Dracula
Winona Ryder was one of the most popular Hollywood names in the 90s, attracting paparazzi for her beautiful looks, her relationship with Johnny Depp, and her projects – one of which turned out to be an absolute hell for her.
Ryder collaborated with Francis Ford Coppola, the mind behind the iconic Godfather, for a horror movie based on the famous 1897 book titled Dracula, which also featured Gary Oldman.
The collaboration of the trio excited many at the time but the Lucas star endured a very tough time during the filming. The initial meeting with her co-star Oldman was pretty normal and they even hung out before “rehearsals and stuff”.
But like typical Coppola production, things started to fall out of place during the making of another masterpiece. Ryder recalled her experience: “But it wasn’t the same after we started shooting. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s his way of working, but I felt like there was a danger.”
The ‘danger’ Ryder felt could’ve been because of Oldman’s acting technique which involved staying in the character (Dracula) even when the camera’s off.
“They got along, and then one day they didn’t. Absolutely didn’t get along,” Coppola later gave his thoughts on the situation. This lack of comfort must’ve also made things tough for the director as both stars had to film some erotic scenes.
Such was the tension between Ryder and Oldman, who later went on to feature in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, that the actress vowed to not work with him again despite the success of the tale of the 15th-century prince on the big screen.
Why Winona Ryder Didn’t Work With Angelina Jolie Again
The Dark Knight star isn’t the only actor that might have rubbed Ryder the wrong way.
She starred alongside Angelina Jolie in the 1999 cult classic Girl, Interrupted, and before the start of the movie the Stranger Things star was even looking forward to working with her co-star.
“I remember thinking, ‘Oh we’re going to turn out to be great friends,’” Ryder recalled. “But I think she needed to be able to look at me just as the character Susanna, not as Winona, so in a very respectful way she just kind of kept her distance.”
Jolie’s desire to be taken seriously and not judged solely on her looks somewhat led to her keeping things serious, leading to a distance between her and Ryder. This led to viewers being robbed of seeing two of the most beautiful faces on the screen at the same time again!
