Jujutsu Kaisen: The Reason Behind Toji Fushiguro and Maki Zen’in’s Monstrous Strength – Heavenly Restriction, Explained
Jujutsu Kaisen has some interesting characters with detailed backstories and impressive powers. Among the frontrunners are Maki Zen’in and Toji Fushiguro, who are an anomaly in a world heavily based on cursed energy. Former members of the Zen’in clan, they were able to use the power of their Heavenly Restrictions and boost their strength and speed to unmatched levels.
During the Culling Game Arc, Maki unlocked her full potential by letting go of what little cursed energy she had left. However, it wasn’t until much later that Maki realized what she was capable of, placing her on the same level as Toji Fushiguro. Both Maki Zen’in and Toji Fushiguro have accomplished feats that are monstrous in their own rights.
Why is Maki Zen’in So Strong?
The answer is simple, Maki Zen’in is strong because of her Heavenly Restriction, which is an interesting element in Jujutsu Kaisen due to Toji Fushiguro’s involvement and what this means for the story. However, the limitation also plays a vital role in Maki’s character and her fighting style.
Maki Zen’in was born into the Zen’in clan with a Heavenly Restriction, which gave her extremely low cursed energy levels. As a result, Maki and her twin sister, Mai, were ostracized by the family. However, due to the Heavenly Restrictions, Maki possessed an innate athletic ability and physical prowess that gave her a certain edge.
In the Culling Game Arc, the Zen’in clan plotted against Maki by sending her to retrieve the cursed tools of the Zen’in clan, only to be thrown into a pit full of cursed spirits along with Mai. Maki was able to release her remaining cursed energy and reach the true potential of the Heavenly Restriction, allowing her to get on the same level as Toji Fushiguro.
How Does Heavenly Restriction Work?
A Heavenly Restriction is a binding placed on a sorcerer’s body that restricts the use of Cursed Energy in exchange for improved attributes, which in the case of Maki was enhanced physical prowess. Similarly, Toji Fushiguro was born with a Heavenly Restriction, which gave him his overwhelming strength.
Another example is Kokichi Muta, known as Mechamaru, who was born with an extremely weakened body but allows him a large range in using his Cursed Energy. Toji’s case is reversed; while he does not possess any Cursed Energy, his overwhelming physical strength makes up for it.
Jujutsu Kaisen hasn’t offered any explanation about how the Heavenly Restrictions came to be, since both Toji’s and Maki’s circumstances are different. Hopefully, the upcoming chapters will give an idea about Heavenly Restrictions and perhaps even give us a Maki Zen’in who surpasses our expectations.
Jujutsu Kaisen can be streamed on Crunchyroll and Amazon Prime.
