Ward accompanies Lewis to various social gatherings, and eventually their relationship develops over her weeklong stay.
Initially, the movie was set to be a dark cautionary story about s*x workers in Los Angeles, along with touching on the subject of class. However, it was conceived as a romantic comedy, which received mixed reviews upon its release. But Julia Roberts’ performance was highly lauded, and it boosted the actress’ career to widespread acclaim. Fans have noted that Julia Roberts’ Pretty Woman has one connection with one of Anne Hathaway’s beloved movies.
Julia Roberts’ Pretty Woman and Anne Hathaway’s The Princess Diaries movies share one actor in ‘identical scenes’
Pretty Woman, starring Julia Roberts as Vivian Ward, a free-spirited Hollywood prostitute, is based on the 1964 song by Roy Orbison, ‘Oh, Pretty Woman’. The actress’ work in the movie was so highly appreciated that she eventually earned her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
But what’s interesting is the fact that Robert’s movie has a connection with none other than Anne Hathaway’s The Princess Diaries films, in which she starred alongside Julie Andrews and Chris Pine. Other than the fact that Garry Marshall directs all three beloved movies, the movies also have identical scenes with the same actor.
According to Collider, the late rom-com king Garry Marshall decided to let these wonderful movies share one more thing common except him directing both. Julia Roberts and Anne Hathaway’s respective characters in the movies cause trouble at a fine-dining event, and a waiter shows up to help them. He simply says, ‘It happens all the time’. The waiter played in both movies is Allan Kent, and he repeats the same dialogue in all three movies.
In The Princess Diaries, Mia breaks a cup when trying to call for a toast and a waiter helps her to pick the pieces, she apologizes. The waiter says, ‘It happens all the time’. Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman, accidentally flicks a piece of escargot, a.k.a. snails, at a restaurant after she struggles to crack it open. The waiter eventually catches it and says, ‘It happens all the time’. In The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Mia Thermopolis, played by Hathaway, gives a royal wave and loses her bracelet. Kent catches the bracelet and says, ‘It happens all the time’.
Allan Kent has appeared in all three movies of Garry Marshall; Pretty Woman and The Princess Diaries (1 and 2), and goes on to teach the audience how to learn something new while staying true to oneself. Kent wasn’t the only actor who had appeared in multiple movies by Marshall, but Hector Elizondo had starred in a dozen movies by Marshall, including Pretty Woman, where he played the hotel manager, and The Princess Diaries, where he played Mia’s bodyguard.
Buzzfeed, however, revealed that director brought in Allan Kent specifically to drop the little Easter egg from Pretty Woman in The Princess Diaries. Despite being in the industry for a really long time, Roberts and Hathaway have just appeared together in 2010’s Valentine’s Day, which included a lot of other actors as well.
Julia Roberts’ brother reveals he is not allowed to talk about her
Actress Julia Roberts is the sister of fellow actor Eric Roberts, who, during his interview with Still Here Hollywood (via EW), revealed that he loves his sister but is not allowed to talk about her. The brother adds that the actress does not want him to talk about her. It is a similar case with his daughter Emma Roberts, and he said,
My daughter told me not to talk about her. But I stumble and do. I’m not supposed to talk about either of them.
The actor was further asked about his favorite performers, and he sweetly replied that he is in love with his daughter’s work these days, adding that he cannot believe how great she’s become. Eric Roberts added
Since her performance in Maybe I Do until right now, she has overwhelmed me with pride and just said, ‘Oh my god. Here it goes again. And I’m just so happy to be her dad because he’s kicking ass, and I’m so proud.
Julia Roberts had appeared on CBS Mornings in 2023 where she touched on the topic of Pretty Woman and revealed when asked what does she thinks about the fate of the characters from the movie. She said that according to her, Lewis passed away peacefully in his sleep from a heart attack, smiling. And now Ward runs his business.
