ASTRO Moonbin Commits Suicide At 25, Idol Life Takes Another Shining Star
Leaving thousands of fans in disbelief, Moonbin, a member of the K-pop band ASTRO was found dead at his home in Seoul on Wednesday night. The 25-year-old debuted in 2016 with ASTRO, which Billboard has branded as one of the top K-pop bands.
He also performed with a subgroup called Moonbin & Sanha. Before finding success in South Korea and Japan, he started his entertainment career as a child actor, modeling for commercials and television.

“On April 19, Astro member Moonbin abruptly left us and became a star in the sky,” his management agency Fantagio said in a statement. However, they did not cite a cause.
Any Signs Of Foul Play In Moonbin’s Death?
According to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency, the singer’s manager went to his home on Wednesday evening as he was not picking up any calls and didn’t arrive for rehearsals. Later, he was found dead at his home in the Gangnam district of Seoul. Police said the superstar, “appears to have taken his own life” but said an autopsy is still underway. South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency, citing an unnamed police official, reported that authorities believe Moon’s death was a case of an apparent suicide.
High-profile Deaths In The K-pop World:
Goo Hara, who passed away in 2019, and other young K-pop celebrities have recently been thought to have committed suicide. She had been mistreated by an ex-boyfriend who, after they broke up, tried to extort her.
The alleged suicide took place a month after Sulli, a K-pop star who had been struggling with online abuse, killed herself. Sulli’s death sparked calls in South Korea for harsher penalties for cybercrimes.
Sulli’s passing was reminiscent of that of fellow K-pop artist Jonghyun, who committed suicide in 2017 after struggling with depression.
Following the news about the death of Moonbin, “all idols” trended on Twitter in South Korea.
“I hope all idols can chase their dreams without feeling heartbroken,” read one tweet.
South Korea has the highest rate of teen suicide among wealthy nations. Deaths among people in their 20s are increasing while the overall suicide rate is declining. In recent years, there have been four suicides in the K-pop industry alone.

K-pop Industry: Beneath The Glitz And Glamour
K-pop artists are discovered by agencies at a young age, typically in their early to mid-teens, and live in a strictly controlled environment. They must adhere to specific guidelines on how to be idols as well. Moonbin enrolled in the training program at the Fantagio label at an early stage.
Thousands of mourning admirers commented on the label’s news, many of whom expressed shock.
“So sorry for the loss of one of the most beautiful souls I’ve met through music! Prayers to his family and friends and employers and fans!” one user responded on Twitter to Fantagio’s post.
“I can’t focus on work now. This really hurts,” wrote another.

Moonbin is survived by his parents and his sister. His sister, Moon Sui, is also in the music industry as part of the girl group Billie.
