Academy Award winner Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the highest-paid actors of Hollywood and certainly, also one of the most talented ones. He rose to international fame with the star-crossed romance movies, 1996’s Romeo + Juliet, and 1997’s Titanic. Both of these movies were critically and commercially successful. He went on to do several great movies in the following years like Inception, The Great Gatsby, and Shutter Island.

Growing up, DiCaprio wished to be either an actor or a marine biologist. While he chose to be the former because he liked imitating others and watching people’s reactions, he is also one of the most active people involved in the climate change movement and believes that global warming is the world’s biggest environmental problem. His decision to become an actor was also to ensure financial security as he grew up poor.

Leonardo DiCaprio is An Active Environmentalist

Leonardo DiCaprio‘s interest in saving the environment is nearly as much as his interest in acting. Needless to say that he excels at both of these. His efforts to raise awareness about climate change have been tireless as he has previously said that he looks to be cast in and produce movies that are related to the issue of climate change or tackling the different problems related to it.

Another movie that he produced in the same year was the Netflix documentary, Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret. He has donated huge sums of money for different environmental causes and uses electric-hybrid vehicles. He has been a subject of great criticism as he still uses yachts and private jets that leave large carbon footprints.

Last year, Leonardo DiCaprio posted about former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro in protecting the Amazon rainforests. He had received backlash from the president himself back then. DiCaprio’s tweet had said, “Brazil is home to the Amazon and other ecosystems critical to climate change. What happens there matters to us all and youth voting is key in driving change for a healthy planet.”

This year, the The Revenant star has posted on Instagram showing his support for current Brazilian president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, under whose government the rate of deforestation of the Amazon has significantly declined.  He has already faced backlash from Bolsonaro and is likely to be troubled by Lula da Silva’s other opponents.

The protection of the Amazon rainforests from any damage is of utmost importance as those forests play a key role in eradicating global warming. However, the activities in Brazil under the former government showed a rapid decline in the density of the forests. Environmentalist groups have been protesting about it for years now to no avail.
