Made a Career from Stealing? Jennifer Lopez’s Biggest Hits were Shamelessly Stolen from Other Artists?
Jennifer Lopez is undoubtedly an icon! However, being the bigshot in the industry has its fair share of scrutiny, and likewise, many people have claimed JLo stole from other artists to make her way to the top. There’s no doubt that the singer had to face and deal with many nonsensical rumors, but this is one of the most persistent ones. In addition to that, the rumor that she cannot sing well, and has to use lip-sync to save face during live performances also does not help.
The triple threat in the industry and the master of all trades has tendencies of “borrowing”, and people caught on to that at a very early stage. Therefore, many still wonder if it is all a sham if Lopez successfully fooled the entire world, or if she is really talented.
Did Jennifer Lopez steal from other artists?
The idea that Jennifer Lopez has stolen from other artists is not a new one. It has been circulating for years, with some people claiming that she has plagiarized lyrics, music, and even entire performances from other artists. Though it is not uncommon for artists to get inspired by one another’s work, but there have been one too many instances that can neither justify her acts as pure coincidences nor inspirations.
Her allegedly copying other singers’ vocals and claiming them as her own is what most people take issue with. For eg., the song I’m Real, which was deemed as a remix, but sounded nothing like its original counterpart, except for Ashanti’s part. Her original demo vocals were retained for the final version, which included her singing the chorus and recording additional ad-libs. This led JLo to give her credit for “background vocals”, and not as a co-writer. JLo will then allegedly go on to rinse and repeat this same process for numerous other hits from If You Had My Love to Jenny From The Block.
It is also claimed by many that the singer has gotten “inspired” by many people, including Usher, Amerie, and Mariah Carey.

JLo isn’t the real Jenny From The Block
Although it is undoubtedly one of JLo’s signature songs, turns out Jennifer Lopez isn’t the real Jenny From The Block, Natasha Ramos is. Jenny from the Block was released in 2002 as part of her third studio album, This Is Me…Then. The song was an instant chartbuster and topped in several countries, including the United States, Canada, and Australia.
The lyrics and music video portrayed Jennifer Lopez’s humble beginnings in the Bronx and how fame and success failed to shadow her real self. It was written by Jennifer Lopez, Troy Oliver, Andre Deyo, and Samuel Barnes. However, it was later revealed that Ramos demoed the track for the famous singer, and it was rumored to be altered accordingly to fit her voice. The speculations and rumors around this topic increased so much, that Ramos had to step in to clear the air.
I just want to clarify something. JLo did indeed go in to the studio and lay down some BGV’s over mine. So I wouldn’t say she’s so much “Lip syncing”, however, the backgrounds are predominantly me, some ad libs (and laughs) as well.

It’s hard to tell the difference between Ramos’ and Lopez’s voices, so if the demo hadn’t been leaked, no one would have known. Jennifer Lopez is still one of the most influential figures in the industry, but the controversy surrounding her songs is still an unsolved mystery.
