Mads Mikkelsen Has an Upsetting News for His Hollywood Future After Indiana Jones Critical Failure at Box-Office
Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen has had an impactful acting career in both American and Danish cinema. Out of the eight international Academy Awards nominations Denmark has, half of them are Mikkelsen’s.
The actor’s work in Hollywood too includes films that are iconic and immensely successful like Casino Royale, and Doctor Strange among others. However, the performance of Mikkelsen’s latest Hollywood release has him reconsidering his career paths.
Mads Mikkelsen On Taking a Break From Hollywood
Mads Mikkelsen has an upsetting news after the lukewarm reception of Indiana Jones and the Lost Legacy. With the star-studded cast that had Harrison Ford reprising his role as Indy, the film was highly anticipated. Mikkelsen, too, was cast in a pivotal role.
However, the film’s performance at the box office and with the critics was surprisingly underwhelming. It is for this reason that Mikkelsen is inclined to take a break from working in Hollywood.
The 2023 film, The Promised Land, which has Mikkelsen in the lead role, is Denmark’s Oscar submission for this year. If selected, this would make Mikkelsen’s number of Academy Award nominations to five.
Speaking of this in an interview with The Wrap, the actor reflected on his experience working in the Hollywood and Danish film industry. Viewing the two in a relative lens the actor said: “I experience the scale difference on those films, but I still try to make it as intimate as I can.”
The Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore actor talked about his need to revisit his roots saying:
“But more and more, it becomes clear to me that I also need to go back [to Danish cinema]. It’s my place. It’s where I started, where my friends are, and there’s a difference in the way of working that I need to be part of in order to go out with extra energy and do the other things.”
Mikkelsen’s “need to go back” might or might not have something to do with the performance of Indiana Jones and the Lost Legacy.

Mads Mikkelsen’s Reason To Do So
Mikkelsen’s preference for Danish films seems to be stemming from a need for creative solace. Vulnerability makes one revert to their roots. Honest and powerful emotions are best conveyed in the mother tongue.

This is why, after feeling disappointed in a film that did not do well, Mikkelsen wants to work again in Danish films for a while. As the actor best described it himself:
“Here, the intimate feeling comes naturally. It’s my language, it’s my stories. Even though I was never on the heath as a kid [referring to his character in The Promised Land], it feels like where I come from.”
Even as the language is changed, more astonishing performances are expected of Mikkelsen.
