Major Canceled Romance Storyline Between Two Main Characters Would’ve Destroyed ‘Friends’
The 1990s stood out as an iconic year for the television industry, with TV shows hitting another level and bringing in new stars that ruled over the hearts of their viewers. In this trend, the all-time favorite sitcom Friends made its debut on TV in 1994. While the show was an instant success, the creators behind it had a hard time crafting the ideas that would sit right with the viewers. One such idea was said to have potentially derailed the beloved sitcom.
A Romance Between Rachel and Chandler Would Have Ruined Friends
In the process of trial and testing the makers of Friends had once thought of developing a romantic angle between Rachel and Chandler. As cringe as that may sound, before ending up with Monica, Chandler was scripted out to be in love with Rachel. However, after seeing fan’s reactions, the makers reportedly scrapped the whole idea.
As reported by Screen Rant, the creators tested this idea in the episode The One with the Flashback. This episode showed Chandler hoping to date Rachel in the past, but he couldn’t make it come true. However, at the end of the episode, it was suggested that there might be a chance for it.
The reaction of fans to this episode was, however, not very positive and it was very clear that both the characters had no chemistry whatsoever. This eventually led the makers to scrap the idea.
Other Ideas Which Were Supposed to Be Part of Friends
Just like the romantic angle between Rachel and Chandler, many other ideas were scrapped by the makers of the shows. As per the reports, one such idea of the makers was to make Rachel and Joey an official couple. Although the cast disliked it, they still played on that storyline for a little while until it was fizzled out.
Just like this, another idea was suggested by Matt Leblanc and Lisa Kudrow which would inform the audience that Phoebe and Joey have been getting together on a causal basis for several years. Well, thankfully the makers did not take the idea seriously as it would have destroyed the image of the perfect friendship Joey and Phoebe enjoyed.
Even though none of these ideas worked out, the legacy that the show has left behind will always be loved and cherished by its fans.
