Mariah Carey Revealed Her ‘Painful’ Relationship With Parents, Claimed Her Own Mother Envied Her That Caused Painful Childhood
Over the years, Mariah Carey has built a successful career for herself. But no matter how well-known she has become, the not-so-supportive bond with her mother, Patricia Carey hasn’t changed.
The 54-year-old singer-songwriter has a flourishing career and a huge fan following, but she admitted that her own mother has never supported her. She revealed in an interview with CBS This Morning that her mother harbored resentment over her success and recalled how her mother’s painful criticism affected the way she raised her own children.
In 1970, the American singer-songwriter was born to Patricia and Alfred Roy Carey.
But as their relationship deteriorated, they separated when the Obsessed singer was only 3 years old. She moved in with her mother after their divorce, while her two older siblings stayed with their father. It’s not surprising that singing was in Carey’s DNA since her mother was a voice instructor and opera singer.
Let’s look at how her family dynamics contributed to her “painful” relationship with her parents as she described in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey.
A Glimpse Into Mariah Carey’s Dysfunctional Upbringing
In 2020, Mariah Carey published a vulnerable memoir titled, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, in which she discussed her difficult relationship with her mother.
The same year, Carey discussed the specifics of how, in order to achieve her goals, she had to get past “dysfunction and mess” in an interview with Gayle King on CBS This Morning. She explained that writing the book was about “emancipating my inner child, the little girl that never really felt seen or heard.”
The Fantasy singer admitted that she had “struggled with race and identity” and tried to find acceptance, which left her “scared”.
“There was a lot of unrest in my household — if there was a household — and I had difficulty coming from such a dysfunctional family. I needed to kind of heal myself and heal that inner child that I tried to keep alive through all of the dysfunction and mess.”
She even shared that she had grown up with her mother, Patricia Carey, an opera singer, who had always been unsupportive and envious of her. Carey’s “family life was complicated,” according to King, hence, the singer found her mother’s jealousy to be “painful”.
“It’s such a complicated relationship,” the Hero singer added.
But She Still Loves Her Mom
Mariah Carey has been through a lot, but she still loves her mother, despite everything Patricia Carey has done to her. She confessed in her book, The Meaning of Mariah Carey that she had felt a “role reversal” with her mother ever since she was a young child.
“I’ve been the go-to, that matriarch person, even as the youngest child in the family.”
According to reports, Mariah Carey continued to play the matriarchal role as she rose to fame and even bought her mother a new house. However, the 54-year-old singer has often expressed her love for her mother verbally and through material gifts.
According to PEOPLE, the Grammy-winning author included a touching tribute to her mother when she published her memoir. “And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”
She has also published a number of posts over the years in memory of her mother. We Belong Together singer celebrated her mother’s birthday in 2019 with an Instagram post. “Happy birthday to a true diva—my mom, Patricia Carey,” she captioned the post.
Therefore, the Against All Odds singer not only inherits some of her vocal prowess from her mother but also some of her diva-like traits. Despite their erratic relationship, it is obvious that Mariah Carey will support her mother no matter what.
