The 21st Century Fox was acquired by the Walt Disney Company in 2019 which led to a major shift in the production of the X-Men projects. All the movies, including Ryan Reynolds’ led Deadpool 3 and X-Force could not witness their theatrical release as they were canceled. Looking at the recent developments in the franchise, the future of MCU-led X-Men looks bright.

Major Update On The Future Of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s X-Men

After the acquisition. the president of the Marvel Studios Kevin Feige has been dealing with the development of the upcoming projects from the superhero franchise, but as reported by Deadline there is no rush to find a writer or to come up with a perfect pitch for the relaunch of the Marvel Cinematic Universe led X-Men after a long time. According to the speculations, the Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy-led franchise needs a makeover.

How Did The X-Men Franchise Slowly Came To An End?

The mad craze for superhero movies in Hollywood started with X-Men. From witnessing the competition between Michael Fassbender’s Magneto and James McAvoy’s Professor to rooting for good over evil, the diehard fans of the X-Men franchise were devastated when the entire franchise came to a dead end after the 21st Century Fox was acquired by the Walt Disney Company in 2019.

The superhero franchise went on to construct the Hollywood career of famous A-Listers like Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence, and Hugh Jackman. The first movie from the franchise was released in 2000 and went on to become a great success both critically and commercially. Wolverine was introduced into the franchise after  X-Men: The Last Stand failed to create an impact with respect to audience reception.

According to a report by the media outlet ScreenRant, the lack of clear vision is also one of the most prominent reasons why the X-Men franchise crumbled. As reported, the last decade of the franchise only saw sequels, reboots, and spinoffs, and failed to create a space for standalone movies from a character point of view. Though the standalone projects based on Logan and Ryan Reynolds’ led Deadpool were blockbusters.

The fans and followers were more interested in knowing the background story of Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique, Nicholas Hoult’s Beast, and Michael Fassbender’s Magneto. However, Hugh Jackman is making a comeback with the third installment of Deadpool in 2024.

Frequently asked questions

Has Marvel officially confirmed the MCU X-Men movie with a cast and release date?

No. As of this article, Marvel Studios was reported to be hearing writer pitches for its X-Men reboot, with a decision on a writer expected around early 2024. No cast, director, or release date had been announced, so any specific casting or release-date claims circulating beyond that should be treated as rumor or fan speculation.

Why did the X-Men franchise stall before its MCU relaunch?

Disney’s 2019 acquisition of 21st Century Fox brought the X-Men film rights to Marvel Studios but paused new X-Men theatrical releases during the transition. The article also argues the prior Fox era lost direction by leaning on sequels, reboots and spinoffs rather than strong standalone, character-driven stories, leaving the brand in need of a reset before a full MCU relaunch.

How does Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine fit into Marvel’s X-Men plans?

The article notes Hugh Jackman is returning as Wolverine in Deadpool 3 (released as Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024). That film is separate from the planned full X-Men team reboot the article focuses on, which was still in early development and at the writer-search stage with no team cast or release date set.
