According to Oppenheimer Production Notes, the English actress Florence Pugh had her pre-determined reasons for opting to work in Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated project of the year, Oppenheimer.
Pugh said, “It’s a Christopher Nolan movie, number one, and number two, he has one of the most incredible leads. Cillian Murphy is an actor that I have been watching for quite some time and have been desperate to work with for ages. You’d have to be mad to say no. It felt like I was playing sports with some of the best athletes, so it was truly one of the best experiences that I’ve had.”
Florence Pugh plays the character of Jean Tatlock, a psychiatrist, Communist Party member, and close friend of J. Robert Oppenheimer. She is represented as an accomplished woman who struggled with personal demons and ultimately met an unfortunate fate. On January 4, 1944, several months after her final encounter with Oppenheimer, Jean Tatlock took her own life at the age of 29
Besides her career in psychiatry, Tatlock was known for her radically left political biases, and her affiliation with Bay Area communists ultimately caused troubles for J. Robert Oppenheimer after World War II. Jean battled with clinical depression for a long duration receiving treatment at the very hospital in which she worked.
