The internet is still rife with speculations about whether or not Robert Pattinson will be joining the rebooted version of the DCU. While fans are still nowhere close to finding the answer to the question Matt Reeves’ words seem to have lit a shining beacon of hope that it might actually happen, but – of course, there is a but – there are certain conditions for that to happen.

Batman remains one of the most beloved DC superheroes to date. In fact, he has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Pattinson’s version of the character is the most recent and the first project he showed up in was 2022’s The Batman which received rave reviews and was a box-office success. So, naturally, fans have been wondering if he will also be joining the DCU.

Over the years, Batman has gained a huge fan following as a comic book superhero character. He has been adapted for live-action films quite a few times including Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed The Dark Knight trilogy in which Christian Bale played the titular role.

The beauty of this particular superhero is that even his rogues gallery is one of a kind. From the Joker to the Penguin, the villains and their stories are so enticing that fans cannot help getting lured into the universe. Joaquin Phoenix and Heath Ledger’s versions of Joker and Colin Farrell’s Penguin are undoubtedly the most iconic versions of the respective characters.

That said, now that the DCU is rebooted and David Corenswet has been introduced as the new Superman, the question that lingers is who will be playing Batman? The easy answer would be Robert Pattinson since he is already portraying the character, but it is more complex than that.

While being interviewed by Josh Horowitz (via Josh Horowitz Clips) at the Golden Globes, Reeves has said that the possibility of Robert Pattinson’s Batman joining the DCU “really comes down to whether or not it makes sense”. However, James Gunn said earlier that Pattinson most probably will not be joining the DCU. At this point, it is hard to tell what the future holds for the franchise.

At the moment, Matt Reeves is very focused on making the best possible sequel to The Batman. This even led to a shift in the release date of The Batman II as they are doing their best to make the story worth the wait for the audience. Reeves told Horowitz:

What the future brings, I can’t really tell you. I have no idea right now except that my head is down now about getting The Batman Part II shooting and to make it something special which is, of course, the most important thing.

He also expressed how grateful he is to co-CEOs, James Gunn and Peter Safran for letting him tell the story that he wanted to tell. That said, fans are divided over whether or not The Lighthouse star’s Batman should join the DCU.

Hopefully, the creators will be able to find a way out of this dilemma of adding Pattinson to the DCU or letting the Elseworlds story be on its own. In the meantime, fans can keep an eye out for any new updates and gear up to watch the new Superman film.

Frequently asked questions

Will Robert Pattinson’s Batman join the DCU?

It is not decided. At the Golden Globes, director Matt Reeves told interviewer Josh Horowitz that whether Pattinson’s Batman joins the rebooted DCU “really comes down to whether or not it makes sense.” DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has previously indicated the Reeves/Pattinson Batman sits outside the main DCU as its own story, so the matter remains open.

What did Matt Reeves say about the future of his Batman?

Reeves told Josh Horowitz he could not say what comes next, explaining his focus is on getting The Batman Part II shooting and making it something special, which he called the most important thing. He also credited DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran for letting him tell the story he wanted.

How does The Batman connect to the rebooted DCU?

The Reeves/Pattinson films are positioned as a separate “Elseworlds” story rather than part of the main DCU continuity. The rebooted DCU has its own Batman plans and introduced David Corenswet as Superman, so the open question is whether Pattinson’s Batman is ever folded into that shared universe or kept standalone.
