Long remaining in the background for several superhero movies during the genre’s early years of live-action, Kevin Feige turned to heading Marvel Studios since its very inception in 2008. Providing his creative input from the very first Iron Man movie to the behemoth Avengers: Endgame, it should come as no surprise that the supremo also had his words for advice for the 2024 Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman starrer Deadpool & Wolverine.

The recently aired flick did wonders for the studio’s dwindling fortunes, burdened by a slew of critical and box-office disappointments, going by the high standards that it had set. Not only did the movie rake in a record-breaking revenue, it also did its part of winning back the fandom’s trust in the Marvel engine. The secret, unsurprisingly, may be none other than Feige.

Currently parked as the sixth highest-grossing MCU movie and the highest R-rated flick ever, Deadpool & Wolverine continues its climb. The star power brought in by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman coupled with a decent script and meta-jokes did its job to perfection. Co-written by the Canadian star, he recently admitted that Kevin Feige did offer him his input before entrusting him with the prized project.

As reported by Deadline, in an appearance at the Fast Company Innovation Festival, the 47-year-old revealed that the Marvel boss’ words worked as a “creative engine” and “haunted” him to stay on the right track.

He said something that sounds very pedantic and is probably not the thing to say out loud, but actually, weirdly, served as a creative engine. He was like, ‘Make every scene great.’ And I was like, ‘Thanks, Kev. Sounds good.’

As a co-scriptwriter, Reynolds had to find the perfect balance between fan service, meta-jokes, and fourth-wall breaks. Additionally, he also had to preserve the legacy of Jackman’s 2017 flick, Logan, and set up the many cameos in Deadpool & Wolverine. As such, Feige’s advice constantly played on the back of his mind, leading to a perfect payoff for the high-stakes film.

Fans blame Kevin Feige for forgetting his advice

The main takeaway from the revelation by Ryan Reynolds was that Kevin Feige had one mantra for success- “Make every scene great”. Accordingly, fans, too, held up this notion but held the Marvel supremo guilty of ‘forgetting’ this very advice. The reason was the drastic slump in the quality of some of the most recent Marvel Studios productions such as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels, the latter of which failed significantly at the box office.

A majority of the studio’s outings following Avengers: Endgame have had a hit-or-miss track record. Moreover, failure to deliver on fans’ expectations and poor CGI in heavily anticipated outings like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness led to a major decline in the overall reception of Marvel Studios while embroiling it in behind-the-scenes controversies. All of which fans have now demanded Feige to answer.

Regardless, following Deadpool & Wolverine, the next MCU outing, Agatha All Along dropped its first two episodes today. On the plate for big screens, Anthony Mackie is lined up next with his Captain America: Brave New World also marking the debut with Harrison Ford’s Red Hulk. Yet, whether the revival of sorts brought by Deadpool & Wolverine continues remains to be seen.
