Mickey’s Steamboat Willie Version Enters The Public Domain
The news of Mickey Mouse’s Steamboat Willie making its entry into the public domain has already created a lot of buzz in the global entertainment industry. The fun-loving mouse in his red pants was first seen in the 1928 short movie Steamboat Willie directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks and the rest is history. Disney had held the copyright for more than nine decades. In a direct statement to CNN, a Disney spokesperson spoke about the copyright issue, which mentioned-
“More modern versions of Mickey will remain unaffected by the expiration of the Steamboat Willie copyright, and Mickey will continue to play a leading role as a global ambassador for the Walt Disney Company in our storytelling, theme park attractions, and merchandise.”
The spokesperson further added that the Walt Disney-led company would protect the modern versions of the widely renowned mouse. The statement further states-
“continue to protect our rights in the more modern versions of Mickey Mouse and other works that remain subject to copyright, and we will work to safeguard against consumer confusion caused by unauthorized uses of Mickey and our other iconic characters.”
Mickey Mouse isn’t the first character to enter the Public domain. In 2022 Winnie The Pooh was introduced after the copyright expiration on A.A. Milne’s original Winnie The Pooh which led to the development of the Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, a horror film in 2023.
