“My mom says, ‘Woody, I knew your dad'”: Matthew McConaughey Claims He’s Woody Harrelson’s Half-Brother
Matthew McConaughey is an American actor and producer known for his charming personality and good looks. Over the past few decades, the 53-year-old has turned into one of the most in-demand leading actors in Hollywood. For his breakthrough performance in the movie, Dazed and Confused, in 1993, McConaughey received significant acclaim. He has since starred in several popular movies, such as The Lincoln Lawyer, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and Interstellar. During a recent appearance on Kelly Ripa’s podcast, The Gentlemen actor made an unexpected remark that he might be Woody Harrelson’s half-brother, mentioning a conversation he had with his mother as proof.
The Possible Biological Relationship Between Matthew McConaughey And Woody Harrelson
Matthew McConaughey and the 61-year-old actor are long-time friends, who share a deep bond in both public and private life. Their bromance has been a subject of interest for their fans worldwide. During a recent appearance on Kelly Ripa’s podcast Let’s Talk off Camera with Kelly, McConaughey revealed that he and Harrelson are working on a new project called Brother from Another Mother.
The duo’s close relationship has always been blurred, and the Interstellar star hinted at a possible biological connection between them. He stated,
“Where I start and where he ends and where he starts and I end has always been a murky line, and that’s part of our bromance, right?” and continued, “My kids call him Uncle Woody, his kids call me Uncle Matthew.”
The Wolf Of Wall Street actor stated that their families have often confused them for each other in pictures and that during a trip to Greece, his mother claimed to have known Harrelson’s father.
He shared, “My family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me, his family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him,” and further disclosed,
“In Greece a few years ago, we’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families and et cetera and my mom is there. And she says, ‘Woody, I knew your dad.”
McConaughey further explained,
“Then, there are possible receipts placing them out in West Texas where there might have been a gathering or a meeting or a ‘knew’ moment.”
When asked if they have taken a DNA test to confirm their relation, he responded, “This is what we’re on the precipice of now.” He added,
“It’s a little easier for Wood to say ‘come on, let’s do it,’ because what’s the skin in it for him? It’s a little harder for me because he’s asking me to take the chance to go ‘Wait a minute, you’re telling me my dad may not be my dad of 53 years’ and believe in it? I got a little more skin in the game.”
The actors have previously worked together in several projects, including the 1999 film EDtv, the 2008 comedy film Surfer, Dude, and season one of HBO’s True Detective.
Despite their fame and success, their friendship remains strong, and McConaughey has often referred to the Triple 9 actor as his brother from another mother.

The actor is no stranger to personal struggles, despite his success in Hollywood. One of his most significant personal issues was his estrangement from his mother, Mary Kathleen McCabe. During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, he opened up about the reasons behind their estranged relationship. The Hollywood personality revealed that his mother leaked stories about him to the media, causing their rift.
He shared, “I was calling my mom at that time after I’d gotten famous, needing to talk to my mom,” he said, adding that he felt a little unbalanced with his new success and wanted his mother’s support. He then revealed,
“And my mom was not the only one on the phone,” he continued,
“The woman that was on the phone was a fan. Of my fame. And so I would have conversations and all of a sudden, whoop, what we talked about shows up in the paper three days later. I was like: ‘Mom, that was between us.”
Conversations between McConaughey and his mother would end up in the papers. The actor said that he felt betrayed and violated and called his mom out on it.
The situation became even more awkward when his mother appeared on Hard Copy, giving viewers a tour of their childhood home and sharing stories about him. The actor recalled,
“There’s Mom, giving someone a tour through the house, [saying] ‘Here’s where I caught him with so and so in bed. Here’s where I saw him in the shower, you know what he was doing in there, haha.”
The situation became too much for the Magic Mike star, who stopped sharing much of his personal life with her. The relationship became strained, and he eventually had to make some boundaries.
He and his mother had a difficult eight-year relationship, but they are now back together. They reconciled, the actor said, once he felt secure in his profession.
