Irish actor Barry Keoghan gained worldwide recognition with starring in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk in 2017 and Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Killing of a Sacred Deer. The talented actor also made his MCU debut as Druig in 2021’s Eternals following his appearance in The Banshees of Inisherin, for which the actor was highly applauded.
The Irish actor surprised everyone when he appeared in a credited scene as Joker in Matt Reeves’ The Batman starring Robert Pattinson. Warner Bros. released the deleted scene from the movie later, which featured Joker and Batman. The actor has now finally addressed the most-asked question about his appearance in the sequel. Let’s find out.

Barry Keoghan teases return of the Joker in The Batman 2

Barry Keoghan not only surprised the audience with his appearance as the Joker in The Batman but also received positive responses from the critics and the audience. Even though his appearance was a cameo, Keoghan made sure that he left an impact on the audience, wanting them to see him more, and it did.
In a recent talk with ETalk, the actor was asked whether he could share his plans of returning to The Batman set as the Joker. To which he said,
“Umm, hmm…I can’t really say anything about that, my man. But I’m you know, it would be exciting, wouldn’t it? To see the Joker come to life again.”
The actor broke into a Joker-like grin before saying,

“My smile says it all, you know what I mean?”
This can be taken as a hint that the actor might reprise his character on-screen for the sequel movie. Earlier, Barry Keoghan suggested that he would love to play that character again if given the opportunity.
After the deleted scenes from The Batman were released, Matt Reeves mentioned that this shouldn’t be taken as an indication that the Joker is going to be lined up as the main antagonist of the sequel.
Reeves’ The Batman 2 was confirmed to be a part of Elseworld tales just like Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker 2 instead of being a part of DCU. The storyline for the upcoming highly awaited sequel has been kept under wraps.

Barry Keoghan explains how he landed the part of Joker in The Batman

During an Esquire interview, the Irish actor was asked about how he ended up with such an iconic character, to which he said that it was funny how that happened. He explained that he had heard about the opening for the role of the Riddler, and while no one asked him to audition or encouraged him to send in his tape, he did that himself.
Barry Keoghan, in his audition tape, walked down a hallway in slow motion and explained that he said,
“I just made it up. I wanted to make it Kubrick-y; symmetrical, the X on the back, the square doorframe, everything square. I just wanted swag to come across. Swag and endearing. It was just me giving my idea. And then I’s like, I’m send this in.”

Keoghan, however, did not end up being The Riddler as it went to Paul Dano, but the Irish actor was finalized to play The Joker. He describes his Joker as a bit of a charming and bit of hurt, broken-down boy.
The actor noted that he refused to let the makeup team change his blue eyes for the part because he wanted to give his character some sort of human touch behind the makeup. He wanted the audience to see that the character puts on a façade.
The Batman 2 is scheduled for an October 3, 2025 release.
