‘Never Really Wanted To Do It’: Liam Hemsworth Hints He Let Chris Hemsworth Take The Role of Thor, Fans Say ‘Grapes Are Sour’
The upcoming Thor movie has all the MCU fans excited. The fourth instalment in the series, Thor: Love and Thunder, has not one but two Thors, with Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster taking up the role of female Thor. It is possible that this might be the last film in which fans see Chris Hemsworth playing the God of Thunder. But did you know that Chris Hemsworth’s brother, Liam Hemsworth, also auditioned for the role of Odinson?
Liam Hemsworth talks about losing the role of Thor to brother Chris Hemsworth
In the May/June issue of GQ, the Hunger Games star talked about the time he and his brother auditioned for the same role. Talking about it, the actor stated,
“We’re not generally looked at in the same age bracket. Thor was the only time when we were really up against each other. I never really wanted to do it. I always felt I was too young for it — I was screen testing when I was 18. The other guys in it were all late 20s or early 30s. I didn’t feel Thor-ish.”
Liam talked about his brother admiringly and said,
“He’s my hero. I look up to him. He’s honestly my last call, when I find myself in a position where I’m 50-50 about a script, then I call Chris. And his opinion, I trust more than anyone in my team.”
Chris Hemsworth talks about sibling rivalry with Liam
The two brothers share a good relationship, and Chris stated that the fact that Liam’s audition motivated him to take up the role of Thor. In an interview with W, the Thor actor stated that when Liam got a call back for Thor, he felt disappointed, but then his manager called the auditioners and said,” ‘You know, he’s got an older brother. Can we bring him back in?” After the call, Chris did another audition in Vancouver in his hotel room with his mum reading Odin’s part. Chris’ nailed’ the audition and then got a call back for a second audition. Talking about the second audition, Chris stated,
“I came in kind of with a little, I guess, motivation and maybe frustration that my little brother had gotten further than me. It’s a little family, sibling rivalry sort of kicked up in me. Then it moved pretty quickly from there. It was cool.”
Chris Hemsworth’s family help him get the role of Thor
It seems like half the Hemsworth family was involved in Chris Hemsworth playing one of MCU’s most powerful and most loved characters. However, Liam Hemsworth wasn’t the only actor who auditioned for Thor; Tom Hiddleston also auditioned for the part. Recently, Tom’s audition tape went viral, but we still cannot imagine him playing anyone other than the God of Mischief.
Thor: Love and Thunder comes out in theatres on July 8, 2022.
